By RITA K. COSBY

The Rev. Joseph Lowery, an
important leader in civil rights, will
be the keynote speaker at USC's
sixth annual uirtnaay uoservance ox
Martin Luther King Jr. at 7 p.m.
Sunday in the Russell
House Ballroom.
The program's coor- .^Sl
dinator, Assistant Dean
of Minority Student
Affairs Ralph Johnson,
said he expects a big
turnout because of
Lowery's prominence.
The reverend cofounded
the Southern
C hristian Leadership ^
Conference with King in
the 1960s and remains its Rev> Josept
president today.
"Each year, we select the keynote
speaker based on their close contact
with Dr. King and their dynamic
impact on black civil rights," Johnson
said.
Two years ago, King's daughter,
Yolanda King, spoke at the
ceremony.
"This year, I.owery was chosen
since he is a well-known minister and
activist and has represented strong
leadership in these fields," he said.
Lowery has been active in civil
rights for more than 30 years, leading
campaigns against the Ku Klux Klan
and police brutality and fighting for
increased employment, jod training
and economic opportunities for
minorities in public and private
areas.
In 1979, the reverend secured a
cease-fire commitment in war-torn

"The ultimate goal for the Women's Studies ^
Program is to get the information on womeii%/
integrated into all the courses offered at the
university," she said.
March has been designated Women's History
Month in the United States, Rossir said. There will
be speakers from Emory University, Stanford
University and the University of Southern California,
and many of the university's departments and
colleges are also planning events.
"We arc very happy that all of the spring coursc
offerings have filled and feel that women's studies
is a growing program," Rosscr said.
Rosser's future plans for the Women's Studies
Program include further expansion of the number
of courses, and to eventually offer a graduate
certificate in women's studies.
