The holiday weekend wasn't

The Irish of Notre Dame and the
Terriers of Wofford found out that
Thanksgiving is a holiday for Indians,
not Irishmen or dogs.
The Miami Hurricanes swept past
the Irish 24-0 the day after
Thanksgiving.
Saturday, the Gamecock basketball
team muzzled and pounded the
Terriers of Wofford 81-62 at Frank
McGuire Arena.
Between the gridirons, the 'Canes
ripped the Irish for the second con
sccuuve ume.
In 1985, Miami cruised past Notre
Dame 58-7.
But there was something awesome
in this latest victory for the Hurricanes,
but there was something
fearsome in it for the Gamecock
football team.
Most observers agree that USC will
be Miami's next victim 011 its way to
a possible national championship
when the Gamecocks travel to the
Orange Bowl Saturday to take on the
Hurricanes.
Miami is 10-0 and arguably the
best team in college football, even
though the Associated Press has
them ranked behind Oklahoma.
This past season the Hurricanes
proved that a pro-style offensive attack
(with a pro-style quarterback)
and a strong defense, seasoned with a
few tough teams on the schedule,
would prevail against an untested
wishbone team.
So what about USC?
. j Well, the Gamecocks have the type

defense that certainly is on a level of
the Sooner defense of 1986.
They have a more prolific offense
with quaricrback Todd lillis. Sterling
Sharpe and Harold Green running
the show.
But can thev survive on the field of
a Miami team that carved up the Irish
in a way that would make doomed
turkeys shudder?
Look for USC head coach Joe
Morrison to change his tune a bit.
Before his team took on Clemson,
Morrison said the Tigers were the
most talented team the Gamecocks
had laced.
Now thp H:trc flrsi'rvinp
of that title.
Thcv blasted a pretty good football
team.
It's not every Saturday a team with
a leading Heisman Trophy candidate
gets shut out, especially when that
player is on offense.
A journalist spoke to a Gamecock
coach during the debacle in Miami.
The coach said USC would present
more problems for Miami than did
the Irish.
Only time and a trip south will tell
if that coach will wash down his
turkey dinner with some crow.
As for the Terriers, they just ran
into a Gamecock team that was full
? not full on its Thanksgiving din
ner, but lull of intensity and
enthusiasm.
They're also lull of talent.
That showed as the Gamecock
basketball squad erupted in the second
half and pulled away to victory.

Brent Price stole an inbounds pass
in the final minute and fed teammate
Darryl Martin for the go-ahead
basket, then made four free throws in
the final 22 seconds to clinch USC's
81-77 victory over George
Washington University Monday
night.
The freshman guard, whose
brother Mark plays for the NBA's
Cleveland Cavaliers, scored all 13 of
his points in the second half, helping
the Gamecocks rally from a 43-34
halftime deficit to earn their second
victory in as many starts this season.
The Gamecocks had led through
the early portion of the game, and
enjoyed a 25-20 advantage with six
minutes remaining in the half.
George Washington then erupted to
outscore USC 21-5 over a fourminute
span, opening an 11-point
margin late in the half.

Price hit an i8-fooi jumpshot with
4:18 remaining to put the Gamecocks
ahead 71-70, but George Washington
rallied to take a 76-73 lead with 2:01
left in the game. George Washington
did not get another point until Kenny
Barer hit a foul shot with four
seconds remaining. In the interim,
Martin and Price each scored four
points to give the Gamecocks a lead
that George Washington could not
overcome.
