In Nebraska, USC wingback Sterling
Sharpe caught a Todd Ellis pass
and ended up with a 80-yard
touchdown.
Although the Gamecocks lost to
the Comhukcrs, 30-21, Sharpe had
defintely done damage.
The 6-foot-1-inch senior was labeled
a major USC threat.
Sharpe found as many as three
defenders on him at a time in the
Nebraska game.
The double and triple coverage
didn't stop in Omaha, though.

in tlie midst of top-ranked defenders.
"It doesn't bother me to be double
and triple covered," Sharpe said. "It
makes me feel important and compliments
our offense."
Because of the coverage Sharpe
has been receiving, he has made an
important transition for the
Gamecocks. He has emerged to
become a leading blocker for USC.
Sharpe throws his 200-pound body
in front of defenders and then leaves
them behind to stare at his tracks.
"If a team is going to put two or
three guys on me, I'm not going to
get many passes," Sharpe said.
"What they don't realize is that I'm
not the only receiver.
"If a team puts that many people
on me they are going to get burned.

Is Sharpe a receiver or a blocker at
heart?
That question will remain
unanswered, but in the 20-7 win over
Clemson, Sharpe was a blocking
threat.
"I pulled my hamstring Wednesday
in practice. Todd threw me a
pass down field and when I went up
for it 1 felt my muscle stretch.
"I missed all of practice on Thrus
day and didn't know if I would be
able to play against Clcmson.
"The game was so important
though. 1 felt it would do the other
members of the team good if I was
out there," Sharpe said.
Sharpe thought his presence on the
field would give the Gamecocks added
confidence.
Sharpe's presence broke the
Tigers' confidence. They doublecovered
him and triple-covered him
throughout the game.
The Tigers got burned as a result.
"During the game, I ran my patterns
up field as usual," Sharpe said.
"But I feel my most important contribution
in our win was my
blocking"
Blocking indeed was important.
Sharpe had the key block in the
77-yard Ellis pass to Ryan Bethea.
The fact that Sharpe only caught
one pass for six yards was not the
issue.
"I'm prepared to block against
Miami," Sharpe said. "They can't
double and triple cover me the whole
game. . . not if (hey expect to be national
champions."
ties Chaikin
The Gamecocks have dedicated the
season to Chaikin and awarded him
with the game ball alter their emo
tional 20-7 victory against Clemson
Nov. 21.
Chaikin said the health problems
have nagged him on and off during
the season, but really became aggravated
before the Clemson game.
The 6-foot-2-inch, 250-pound
tackle lost about 20 pounds from
December 1986 to April 1987 because
of bronchitis, pneumonia, and the
removal of a tumor from his chest.
He recovered, played in eight
games, and recorded 34 tackles while
helping the Gamecocks post an 8-2
record.
