OK, OK. Everyone knows
^ it's Clemson-Carolina week, but
there arc other things going on in the
wonderful world of sports.
Just for starters, George Felton
pits his Gamecock basketball team
against Marathon Oil in a fake game
tonight.
This past season, Marathon Oil

Marathon Oil plays a bunch of
NBA cast-offs and collcge-starsturned-park
rccrcators.
This group of players would give
any major college basketball team
fits.
Imagine being an 18-year-old
freshman going up against a team
that has players who were bouncing a

school.
That was really the case this past
! season.
The Gamecocks had one starting

but again, young players.
Felton, in his second year as
Gamecock head coach, should fare a
little better this time.
He still has a young team, but the
roster is dotted with juniors and
seniors who have been through a
basketball war or two.
The crop of incoming freshmen
should yield a bountiful harvest tor
seasons to come.
Michael Glover, Barry Manning,
John Hudson, Brent Price and Jeff
Roulston are the results of one of the
best recruiting seasons the
Gamecocks have had since they
brought the Dozier twins to Columbia
in one fell swoop.
Felton is considering red-shirting
either Hudson or Roulston, but both
will probably sec action against
Marathon Oil.
Yes, there will be other activities
going on in the wonderful world of
sports besides holding, skinning, and
killing that Tiger.

More than just the ClemsonCarolina
game will take place
Saturday.
USC may, or may not, receive its
second bid to the Gator Bowl in four

the nation, played in the Jackson

Hold was the quarterback and
"Black Magic" was the rage.
Now, after a pre-season and
season of being called a team with
"bowl possibilities," the Gamecocks
arc apparently high on the Gator
Bowl selection committee's list.
With the bowl picture finally
beginning to take form, fans have
already begun to bombard the
Jacksonville Coliseum officcs with
ticket orders.
Sara Duncan, who has worked at
the coliseum selling tickets for the
past four years, said no telephone
orders will be accepted, however.
"I've probably taken 300 or 400
calls," Duncan said Tuesday. "I'd
say about at least 100 have been from
South Carolina fans. We got some
last week, but they really picked up
today. We probably got some as far
back as two weeks ago."
USC'i Gamecock Club and Sports
Information offices have also handled
calls concerning the Gator Bowl.
Both organizations have been hesitant
