Williams-Brice Stadium is a giant
that engulfs lonely travelers and spits
them out onto the football field.
Attending the weekly football
press conference Monday was a terrifying
experience.
As usual, 1 entered the stadium by
way of the players' entrance.
I entered the Hall of Captains with
a small tape recorder in my hand.
I he Hall ot Captains is a
Gamecock football shrine. Its walls
are lined with pictures of former
pla>ers who were captains of
Gamecock teams dating back to the
first football season at USC.
The pictures are haunting. The
players eyes follow you all the way
down the hall as if they are protecting
the hall from intruders.
Walking through the doors, I
made a right to try to find Coach
Joe Morrison and the media.
Light peered through the fence,
creating shadows on the walls. Gentle
noises from the traffic rang through
the stadium tunnel.
"Ah, two open, black double
doors; that must be where it is," 1
saiu 10 ui\ sen .
Walking down a carpeted hallway,
1 discovered many things in
Williams-Brice I never knew existed.

each section of the football
team has its own meeting room.
l or example, quarterbacks have a
room, and down from that room is
;t room for offensive linemen. It is
m these sacred rooms that some of
L'SC's besi athletes have watched
their mistakes on film and tried to
correct them before the next game.
So where was the room filled with

in Gamecock attire answering them?
Still no door, but I found racquetball
courts. The panels of glass gave
way to the holed-out area. The lights
were on, bouncing off the oak tloors
and lighting up the freshly painted
white walls.
Wondering aimlessly through a
ma/.e of halls, 1 finally saw an exit
sign.
Going through those exit doors
didn't help. The doors just led to
another hall, but this time there were
cement tloors and walls.
Through the tunnel, I saw the
light.
Walking toward it, 1 found myself
outside on the opposite side of the
stadium from where I had started,
right in front of the end /one.
I proceeded to retrace my previous
steps in order to find the Hall of Captains
and begin again.
After 10 minutes without making
any progress, 1 went to the equipment
room to ask directions.
I hate asking directions, because

A tall man who was folding football
pants gave me directions.
"Go down the Hall of Captains,
and take a righthe said. "Go down
to the two open double doors; that is
where the conference is."
Little did he know where those
first two double doors led.
He probably didn't know where
anything was except the equipment
room.
Lventually, I found ti.e conference,
but how hard can it be when
you're following an assistant coach
headed in the same direction?

time Furman argued ther goal, but
they were as unsuccessful as USC had
been earlier.
For the rest of the game, neither
team was successful in scoring, and |
they went into the two 10-minute
overtime periods still knotted at 2-2.
The overtime periods were just as
fruitless, and the Gamecocks go into
this weekend's Metropolitan I.ife
Tournament needing impressive wins
to maintain tneir ino.j ranking in inc
