Think for a moment about the
pumpkin that sits out on the porch
every year at about this time.
Orange, tubby, two triangular
gouges for eyes, another for a nose
and a banana-shaped mouth.
One place in town opens its doors
every Halloween to the more bizarre,
creative and macabre genre of pumpkin
creations and creators ?
Goatfeathcr's in Five Points.
"I just wanted to do something
other than a costume contest," said
owner Jeff Helsley, sitting at the
large round table in the center of the
quaint pub, sorting out flyers for the
event, which takes place this
Saturday.
The flyers are orange and black
with the most grisly looking pumpkin
imaginable, seemingly ready to carve
itself up with a knife and fork propped
on cither side of it.
"I want people to be a lot more
creative," Helsley said. "And I want
to promote people to enter." In this
past year's contcst, there were 80
entries.
"People who've never carved
before will be surprised. People that
never thought they'd win have walked
away with money," he said.
And speaking of money, there is
$500 in prize money to be won and
$250 for the first prize, $125 for second,
$75 for third and $50 for the
most innovative entry.
There are some rules contestants
must follow ? only one entry is
allowed per person, the creation must
be purely pumpkin (toothpicks, wire,

"1 just want to see a lot of pumpkins,"
Helsley said. "People have
created the most incrediblc stuff.
Some have run the pumpkin through
a garlic grinder to create the hair and
roasted the seeds to use as beard

"Once we had a sculpture in here
that was 150 pounds. A couple of
years ago two USC co-eds who had
never touched a pumpkin before
won. People should give it a shot,"
he said.
To register, pumpkins must be
brought to Goatfeather's between 11
a.m. and 6 p.m. on Halloween, and
judging will take place at midnight.
Cookies and drinks will be provided
for children until 7 p.m., and contestants
need to be present in order to
win.
This will be Goatfeather's Fifth
Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest,
and it has made quite a name for
itself.
While Helsley was sorting his
strange flyers, a couple peered inquisitively
into the pub.
"I don't see anything, dear," the
lady said to the man.
"Nope," the man replied.
Helsley explained to them that the
pumpkins would only be displayed
on Saturday.
"Oh, shucks," the lady said.
"We're going out of town this
weekend."
"Well," the man said. "I guess
we'll just have to come back a day
early. I don't want to miss this."

Dinosaur
Most people dream about fulfilling
certain life-long desires. For some it
may be a gondola ride down the
canals of Venice, Italy. Others might
wish to meet a hero of stage and
screen.
For the past 10 years, I have been
obsessed with a dream of my own: to
see at least one of the truly great
dinosaur rock bands in concert. This
nast Mondav. mv dream came true
when I saw Pink Floyd at the Dean
Smith Center in Chapel Hill.
The roots of my obsession go back
to seventh grade, when I was thrust
into junior high and suddenly surrounded
by "big kids." Aside from
learning that girls were good for
something other than throwing spitballs
at, I learned there was more to

As time went by, it became apparent
to me that most of the bands I
was listening to had either been
broken up for years (such as The
Doors and The Jimi Hendrix Experience)
or were aging rapidy. I
began to worry I might never see any
of my musical gods perform live in
concert. Thus began the long road to
Chapel Hill, at times lined with death
and disappointment.
In ninth grade I gave $45 to one of
the school burnouts who assured me
she could get tickets for Pink Floyd's
The ^//concert at Nassau Coliseum
in New York. The next time I saw her
in school, about three weeks after the ^
concert, she told me her brother got t-V
