10,000 Maniacs, In My Tribe,
Elektra Records
Listening to the third full-length
10,000 Maniacs album is a bit like
getting a letter from home, because
lead maniac Natalie Merchant draws
from her hometown of Jamestown,
N.Y., to deliver songs ranging in sub
ject from a family wedding to child
abuse.
Unlike earlier 10,000 Maniacs
releases, particularly 1985's The
Wishing Chair, there is no longer a
musical duel between Merchant and
the rest of the band. Thanks to the
sympathetic production of Peter
Asher, who has worked with James
Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, the band
plays with a practiced restraint that
allows Merchant's vocals to shine.
Sounding a bit like a folk-inspired
Debbie Harry, Merchant sings songs
of love, life, hope and pain. An arH/?nt

The club filled fast; the lights were
dimmed; and the fans waited,
sometimes impatiently, for one of the
hottest rock 'n' roll bands of the
'70s. Finally, after midnight, Foghat
appeared on stage at Concerts Plus.
The show opened with one of
Foghat's most familiar tunes, "Fool
for the City." By the end of the third
song, most members of the audience
was on their feet dancing and singing
to the music. As late as 30 minutes into
the show, people were still coming
into Concerts Plus to see what has
been described as a comeback attempt
for Foghat.
The audience was comprised of an
older crowd, late 20s to mid-30s,
who were teenagers during the band s

As disappointed as she may be
with her brother, the joy she feels for
her sister on her wedding day is made
apparent on "My Sister Rose," a
lively track that bounces along while
describing the entire reception ?
from the wedding cake to the polka
band, it's all there.
Other highlights include the
aioum s nrsi single, an exceucm
cover of Cat Steven's "Peace
Train," and the catchy "A Campfirc
Song," which features guest vocals
by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe.
To be truthful, with the exception
of the smarmy "City Of Angels," all
the tracks on the album are worth a
spin. In My Tribe is an exceptionally
good record.
One last note for the compact disc
generation: The album was recorded
on digital audio equipment, so do
yourself a favor. If you have a C.D.
player, buy the compact disc. The
sound is vastly superior to the album
and the cassette and certainly worth

fans were as filled with energy on the
floor as Foghat was on stage. Many
of them clung to the sides of the stage
reaching up for a handshake or watching
for a smile when the opportunity
lent itself for cither. Their reaction
to the band was like a class reunion.

Although the band was somewhat
loud for anyone within 400 or 500
yards of the stage, the fans didn't
seem to mind. They were there to see
'their' band, and they got just what
they asked for ? a night of rock, roll
and remembrance.

It's Monday again. For a lot of good reasons
we greet this day with the same enthusiasm we feel
when opening our phone bill. The weekend has
left us drained, maybe even bruised, and next Friday
seems like light years away.
Although it's doubtful that Monday will ever
become a favorite day, there is something to do to
take a little bit of the sting out of it.
For the past three years, Rockafellas' has been
offering a cure for mundane Mondays.
Monday nights at the local club have become a
showcase for some of the best new music happening
anywhere in the country. In the past, bands

Both bands are from San Francisco, a real hot
spot right now for new music.
The Cat Heads just released their debut album,
Hubba, and it has some impressive stuff on it.
Their sound has sort of a post-psychedelic feel.
There is a definite foundation of folkish blues and
trashy pop that brings to mind bands such as The

The Cat Heads are both diverse and wellrounded.
They do some folksy ballads and some

serious like on the cuts "I Would Kill for Suzy"
and "The Final Letter." At other times they arc
just having fun. Songs such as "Power, Love and
Pizza" and "Golden Gate Park" illustrate the
band's refreshing sense of humor.
The band consists of four members. Melanie
Clarin plays drums and sings on some of the
slower stuff. Sometimes she sounds like Marianne
Faithful, and at other times she swings into a
Suzanne Vega tone.
The guys in the band include Sam Babbitt, who
plays some real shiny-chrome guitar leads;
rhythm guitarist Mark Zanandrea, who financed
the band with the money he got from an insurance
settlement when he was hit by a car; and Alan

Blue Movie has played at Roqkafella$|,before,
and the band's return to Columbia should be a
welcome treat. The group is making some major
waves out on the West Coast and should be headed
for bigger and better things.
So go on out tonight and take a chance on some
rock 'n' roll fresh out of the oven, because if we
don't start giving a little more support to the
musical scene in this town, pretty soon there
won't be one.
