Woman accepts medieval proposal
SEBASTOPOL, Calif. ? Curtis Huffman was an imposing, if
somewhat anachronistic sight, garbed in heavy chain mail in best Prince
Valiant fashion and mounted on a borrowed steed.
He and his horse were especially strange on Teresa Boom's driveway,
where Boom, 20, and a crowd of delighted, shutter-snapping neighbors
spotted him Friday.
"My love," said Huffman, 27, emerging from the bushes and scaring a
dog. "I would be so honored if you would marry me and live with me happily
ever after."
Down lurched the lovesick swain on one knee.
"If you say no," suggested the man, tottering under the weight of his
metal suit, "then please take my sword and sever this head from my ugly
body."
His fair maiden, declining the surgery, murmured a modest yes.
With that, 300 helium-filled balloons rose into the sky and the "Hallelujah
Chorus" swelled from cleverly concealed speakers as the crowd applauded
lustily.
Teacher gets punishment in writing
COLUMBIA, Tenn. ? A judge used an age-old disciplinary measure to
get the attention of a fifth-grade reading teacher who appeared in his court
on a speeding charge.
Maury County General Sessions Judge Jimmy Matthews ordered Mary
Ann Hicks-Adcock of Nashville to write "I will not speed" 25 times.
Hicks-Adcock was ticketed on Labor Day for going 85 mph in a 65 mph
zone. She was given her sentence in lieu of performing public service work
for the county.
"I just thought it might impress on her to stay within the speed limit,"
Matthews said.
The judge said he received the results of Hicks-Adcock's "write-off"
recently, along with 30 letters from her students.
Minor planet gets name of professor
TOLEDO, Ohio ? First it was "1982 BT1," then it became "minor
planet 2954."
Now, the minor planet, or asteroid, bears the name of Armand
Delscmme, a University of Toledo professor of astrophysics. "Delscmme"
is one of thousands of objects in the solar system, ranging in size from 10
to 1,000 miles in diameter.
The minor planet was discovered by Edward Bowell, an astronomer who
specializes in minor planets, on Jan. 30, 1982, while making observations
at the Lowell Observatory in Arizona.
