You probably remember him if you are from South Carolina. He's the guy who likes to make love on the Capitol steps. He's the guy who "inadvertently" took a $50,000 bribe from an FBI agent posing as an Arab sheik. He's also the guy who spent 13 months in a federal prison after that little goof with the money caused him to be convicted in October 1980. Run, Johnny, run. He's the guy whose ex-wife found $25,000 stuffed in his brown suede shoe. He's also the guy whose ex-wife posed seminude in Playboy and then capitalized even more on a bad situation by writing a book about her hard-luck husband. C'mon, Johnny, run. To top all of that he's a disbarred lawyer, a recovering ? 1 i i: 1 . -ii ? ? ? - ciicunuiiL. anu is noi anowea 10 vote until ne gets ott probation. But he can still run for office. ^ Now he is doing a poll in his district to find out whether or not a successful run for Congress against incumbent Robin Tallon would be possible. Since 1974, he has been very popular among his constituents, especially blacks. He lost a close election in 1980 even though Abscam exposed him as a crook. He is also a personable man who you can't help but feel a little sorry for because of the mistakes he's made. But popularity and sympathy are not good enough reasons to wage a serious campaign. He says the poll is aimed at finding out two things ? if voters are dissatified with Tallon and if they will back Jenrette. He has already been doing the things politicians do. He has been going to weddings, funerals and public events, and people everywhere are anxious about his decision to run. Democrats in the state, however, have more sense than that. They know that a man such as Jenrette could wreck the party in ^the state. Jenrette should know it too. Considering a run for office again after the stupid things he has done is totally inane. He should limp off gracefully and disappear from politics forever. After a summer of watching hacks, losers, henchmen and inept deal-makers on our television screens become national heroes just because they thought what they were doing was right doesn't mean that Jenrette can pull the same hocus-pocus on us. We all know politics is crooked. That's why it is stupid for us to even entertain the ridiculous notion of a confessed, true-blue crook running for office. As South Carolinians who have been slammed by the press lately for our attitudes about the pope, we should also learn that supporting Jenrette for Congress is just plain dumb and sets us up for more ridicule. The only running he should be doing is running away from politics. ? \ * *** ? <// I? ?V?6 fO I* X, . c - i ? / Kirnr TO-MMA- \ .?
