The Philharmonic Chorus, the only vocal ensemble on
campus that allows non-USC students to join. Its variety
runs through its music to its members.

when the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra asked
him to gather a group to accompany a Christmas perfordih
mance of Handel's "Messiah."
Nancy Washington, assistant director of the Library
Processing Center, has been a member of the chorus for a
year. She said the work "demands a certain amount of
vocal background and the ability to read music." There
arc no auditions, however, and an outstanding voice isn't
necessary, she said.
Sherry Brown has been in th chorus for three years. She
received a bachelor of arts in education from USC and is a
former member of Carolina Alive.
"It's a really good way, 1 think, for the university to
provide a way for outside people to get involved," she
said. "Once you leave school, if you've not majored in
music, you're kind of left out
"Dr. Conant is able to take people who were not music
majors and pull out of them good music. . . .He actually
makes learning music theory fun," she said. <
The chorus primarily performs large vocal works, such :
as oratorios, classics and masses. They arc often accompanied
by the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra
and University Symphony Orchestra, and they usually I
perform at The Township auditorium. <
