After seeing Dragnet, the
1 movie update of" the TV scries,
one is sure of just this fact: Dan
Aykroyd is detective Sgt. Joe
Friday.
i1 After spending years behind
1 the spcctre of his early partner,
the late John Belushi, Aykroyd
finally gets a film that puts him
i' firmly in control, with his uncan
ny ability to mimic people.
While the last 20 minutes of
Dragnet drags between jokes as
action gets in the way of the
I Jk humor, the tnovic as a whole is
i enjoyable.
t Aykroyd's Friday is the
nephew of the original Joe Friday,
played in the Dragnet TV
show by the late Jack Webb. Friday
is issued a less than by-thebook
partner, Pep Streebek (Tom
Hanks), to investigate a series of
} crimes attributed to an organiza
tion called PAGAN (People

Friday and Strccbck must
discover how the theft of men's
magazines, zoo animals and
dangerous chemicals relate to
PAGAN's dastardly plans.
After years of being Bclushi's
partner, Aykroyd has had many
ups and downs in his quest to
prove he has something to offer
as a comedian. Trading Places,
Ghostbusters and even Spies Like
Us showed that Aykroyd was a
bankable actor.
He is, however, partial to lowkey,
unexcited characters and has
been paired in previous movies
with hyperactive Saturday Night
Live alumni such as Chevy
Chase, Bill Murray and Eddie
Murphy. He even admitted that

Dragnet presents a major
change for Aykroyd. There are
no SNL people this time around,
and Hanks never comes close to
stealing a scene from Aykroyd.

Watching M c 1 Brooks'
Spaceballs evokes the feeling of
watching a famed performer's
last agonizing moments. He is the
only one who doesn't notice his
heyday is over, and he stands
alone onstage in front of empty

Brooks seatter-gun style
humor of one-liners, puns and
sight gags once had more hits

unpredictable.
But taking on a combination of

The jokes are stretched so thin,
they should be used on Bob

To discuss Spaceballs further
would bring more undeserved at
