Fritz's idea to execute Marines
for espionage is just murder
Senator Fritz Hollings never ceases to amaze.
Whv inct -a few weeks aon. he had a brief lanse ir
memory when he forgot the United States is a signatory ol
the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. He disregarded that little
historical fact so he could tell President Reagan he had
every right to break it and test SDI right away.
Fritz recently called for a return to the peacetime drafi
and a turn away from the minority-dominated armed ser
vices, not because there are too many "unwhite" people ir
uniform, he said, but because we've got to force all then
fine white boys, who think they got better things to do, in
iu nit <u my.
Sure,Fritz.
But Fritz's latest proposal really gives one cause to thin!
about his cranial capacity and his ability to reason.
He wants to kill Marines.
But these Marines are not ordinary Marines according t<
Fritz. They have betrayed our country; they might hav<
possibly committed treason and, if Fritz has his way, kill
ing one or maybe the whole lot will stop future such in
discretions on the part of Americans, either military o
civilian.
Such shrewd deductions we would expect from a Jess
Helms or a Donald Regan. But for those words to com
out of Fritz Hollings' mouth is slightly disarming. In spit
of his penchant for coming up occassionally with duml
ideas, he's always been fairly level-headed. Guess we wer
wrong about Fritz.
The Marines in question were security guards at th
American embassy in Moscow. The three Marines were ai
rested for espionage,and two of them were involved sexua
ly with Soviet women who later introduced them to KG!
agents.
They definitely should be court-marshalled and punish
ed severely. But they shouldn't be killed to set an examph
it s simpiy too mucn. i ne Marines are oeing mac
scapegoats for a problem they didn't start, hut merely gc
caught in. Inadequate security measures left unchanged b
U.S. officials and allowed to grow should be addressed an
investigated as vigorously as the three Marines. But Hoi
ings continues to rant and rave about the Marines.
Hollings was quoted as saying: ''That's the penalty whe
I was in uniform. If you turned over and worked with th
enemy, you were lined up and shot, and that's that. That
the auickest wav to get discipline back."
In a further burst of stupidity, he also said that if yo
take one of them and blow a few holes in him,it will mat
others think twice about cavorting with the enemy or mes
ing around with women on the job.
That's no solution;that's a reaction, a gut level responj
to something that can't be easily handled. Fritz is takin
the hardline, but what it is is a macho political message t
his constituents. Maybe we should give the gun to Fritz an
ask him to do the honors and then clean up the mes
