A fictionalized relationship between two
real villains of the Old West is the theme of a
play opening tonight at USC's Longstreet
Theatre.
Jesse and the Bandit Queen was written in
1975 by David Freeman and has appeared offBroadway.
Presented locally by the department
of theatre and speech, the play creates
an affaii hctwppn iwn violent infi?nc<>
characters of the 19th century West: Jesse
James, an outlaw who robbed banks and
trains, and horse thief Belle Starr.
In the play, James and Starr meet at 17 and
begin a relationship that lasts until their untimely
deaths at 34. But in reality, Starr died
at a much older age. She also married Cole
Younger, one of James' partners in crime.
The real-life James and Starr probably only
N met once.

Director Jenny Cooper, a graduate student,

plays Starr. She said the play concentrates on
the elements that bring James and Starr
together: passion, sex and violence.

Eterovich and Harley are the only actors
seen onstage throughout the play. In addition,
each actor plays minor characters involved
in the pasts of James and Starr.
Cooper said the audience sees these supporting
characters only through the eyes and
viewpoint of the outlaws, which creates a
deeper understanding of them. "It's almost
like a slide show that they narrate."

Eterovich said the real-life James' and
Starr's violent acts were the results of horrors
inflicted upon their families during the Civil
War.

war and sought revenge for Union acts
against their families, she said.
Cooper said James was tortured as a child
by Union soldiers. Starr and her family were
also harassed and terrorized.
These acts solidified a violent lifestyle and
hatred of the Union, she said. In fact, James
was once a member of Quantril, a band of
guerillas that killed Union supporters, she
said.
Harley said James appeals to the rebel in
everybody. "I think there's a side to people
that wants to be anarchic, and he emulated
it."
Jesse and the Bandit Queen shows at 8 p.m.
today through Friday at Longstreet Theatre.
Tickets are $2 for students, $2.50 for faculty
and staff and 53 for the public. For more information,
call the box office at 777-2551 or
2552.
