The annual exodus from USC begins Friday
as students load up cars with beach supplies,
six-packs, suntan lotion and other survival
items for sprinc break.
USC students will travel to hotspots, such
as Cancun, Mexico and Key West, Fla., said
Patrice Travis of the American International
Travel Service.
The service began booking for these two
areas in November. Price ranges for hotel and
airfare started at $314 for a one-week stay in
Key West and $300 for a four-night stay in
Cancun, she said.
^ Chuck Campbell, entertainment writer for
^ the Daytona News-Journal, said the most
popular towns for the spring break season,
which lasts more than four weeks, arc
Daytona Beach, drawing about 375,000 college
students; South Padre Island, Texas, attracting
300,000 students; and Fort Lauderdale,
bringing in about 200,000 students.
Daytona Beach
During USC's week-long break, Daytona
Beach off icials expect about 100,000 students,
Campbell said.
^ Area bars such as P. J.'s Rock 'n' Roll
Concert Club and The Other Place will
feature live rock bands and contests and give
away T-shirts and beer mugs.
Campbell said other events include the annual
National Collegiate Sports Festival
semifinals. Colleges compete for four weeks
in events such as flag football, tennis,
wcightlifting and swimming. Semifinalists
from each week will return in the fall for the
finals, Campbell said.
Two concerts will be held during the week.
Eddie Money will appear at the Bandshell on
March 11. Admission is free. Rcba McEntire
and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will perform at

Fort Lauderdale
The grandfather of spring break spots also
has its share of beaches, activities and sun
shine for students cruising to Florida.
Activities sponsored by the Broward County
Spring Season Task Force, "Y-100" radio
station and Anhcuscr-Busch Inc. include the
Second Annual Spring Break Games. The
games, like the Daytona games, feature events
in basketball, volleyball, tug-of-war and
beach blanket bingo, said Ina Lee of Travel
Host Magazine of Fort Lauderdale.
Nightclubs such as Pinrod's Pool and Surfdeck,
Summers on the Beach and the Candy
Store will also be hosts of special events and
live bands including barbecues, nightly happy
hours and contests.
The drive to the hotspots
Anheuser-Busch Inc. will sponsor "Pit
Stops" offering free coffee, doughnuts and
advice about highway safety and responsible
alcohol consumption for students on the
highways to Florida.
For four years, these stops have been
regular sights along 1-65 near Henryville,

Savannah, said Anhcuser-Busch representative
Mary Dempster.
"Last year,we had 30,000 students stop at
the break areas over a three-week period.
They represented over 650 colleges around the
country," she said.
The program began because groups such as
Mothers Against Drunk Driving expressed
concern about the influx of the alcohol industry's
promotions during spring break in
areas such as Daytona Beach and Fort
Lauderdale, Dempster said.

His 1977 platinum album
The Stranger returned him to
the charts with the hits "Just
the Way You Arc," "Only the
Good Die Young," "Movin'
Out (Anthony's Song)" and
"She's Always a Woman."
Joel is comparable to Bruce
Snrincsteen because he has a
legion of dedicated fans, his
songs arc small stories and
slices of life, and he is known
for energetic three-hour
concerts.
Joel has not always been as
popular with music critics as
with fans. They have called his
music trite and commercial,
but most praised the artistic
experimentation on his 1982
album The Nylon Curtain and
The Bridge.
Tickets are still available for
