With only about one month
left in the basketball season, it's
just about time to ask the question:
^ What is all this whining
about the 3-point shot ruje in
the collegiate ranks?
Denny Crum, head coach of
the national champion
Louisville Cardinals, is always
spouting off about how he
hates the 3-nnint rnlr? anH
it "cheapens the game." And
USC's very own head coach
George Felton has never tried to
hide the fact that he dislikes the
rule as well.
Crum says because you don't
^ get any extra points for making
w a longer field goal in football,
or you don't get an extra run
for hitting the ball farther over
the fence in baseball, why
should you get an extra point
for being outside some stupid
line?
What a crock!
The reason is, Denny,
because it makes the game more
exciting to watch, brings in the

makes the game better,
i If coaches had always
resisted change, there would
still be a jump ball after every
basket made. And teams would
probably still be freezing the
ball for the whole game and
putting the fans to sleep.
In 1983, a coach at North
Carolina State University named
Jim Valvano had to deal
^ with the 3-point line because the
Atlantic Coast Conference was
using the rule as an experiment
in the regular season.

Valvano never claimed to
love the rule, but he used it
anyway. And he used it to the
fullest by taking his team all the
way to the national championship.
They won not only
because just the ACC used the
3-point rule, but because
NC'SU, with long distance
shooting practice, became an
outside threat and won a few
games at the buzzer.
Think about it. If a small
NAIA team comes into an
arena and has to face one of the
Division I giants, what possible
hope can it have of winning if
it's totally outclassed in every
category?
They can either play "stall
ball" and hope for a 2-0 upset
with the crowd snoring from
boredom (oh, wait a minute,
you can't do that anymore
because of the shot clock the
coaches voted for to make the
game more exciting), or it can

perimeter shooters to have
enough skill to hit the
20-footer.
OK, so listen up you head
coaches. Give the little guy in
Omaha, New York's
playgrounds or Detroit's housing
projects the chance to put
his patented 20-foot street shot
to use. He may not be big
enough to bang under the
boards, but 10-1 he can help
you from the outside when
you're down by 5 with one
minute to go.
If you don't like the rule,
fine. But don't sacrifice a possible
strategy because you're
pride won't let you use it. i
It's a different rule, but it is a
rule nonetheless, so use it. Give
your little men a shot.
