Chris Abboushi
comes off bench
as USC walk-on
By WAYNE WASHINGTON

When USC starter Tony Shaw fouled out with 12
minutes left in the final period against Louisville,
walk-on Chris Abboushi entered the game.
While the crowd at Frank McGuire Arena was
busy booing the officials for what they believed was
a questionable call, hardly anyone noticed Abboushi's
entrance.
His teammates said he seemed poised and very
much under control. Perhaps that's because he was.
Abboushi, a 6-foot, 165-pound industrial
management senior, has been the Gamecocks' safety
valve this season.
He has no sparkling statistics and draws no rave
reviews for possessing vast amounts of natural
athletic ability.
Yet, when reserve strength is needed, Abboushi is
one of the first players head coach George Felton
calls.
/\gainsi Louisvme, nc answered that call.
"I was surprised I wasn't afraid," Abboushi said.
"Coach has a lot of confidence in him being a
walk-on," added team captain Michael Foster.
The Gamecocks were down by 9 points, and the
Cardinals showed signs of breaking the game open,
but Abboushi's defensive effort sparked a USC
rally.
Then, when the Cardinals began overplaying his
teammates, Abboushi drove the lane and put up a
jumper in front of three Louisville players who were
at least 4 inches taller.
Abboushi's jumper found its way into the net,
and the Gamecocks found themselves down by only

"It was a big shot for him and a big shot for the

The Gamecocks, however, were called for more

Despite the loss, Abboushi gained the respect of

Defending national champions
the Louisville Cardinals,
withstood a late second-half rally
by USC to gain a 59-55 Metro
conference men's basketball victory
in Columbia.
USC was down by as many as
11 points three times in the second
half Wednesday, and a few
times it looked as if the Cardinals
would run away with the game.
But the Gamecocks' pressure
defense and a few Louisville
misses at the free throw line gave
USC a chance to win in a
regionally televised game.
"This is probably the best
game we've played in the past
two weeks," head coach George
rcuuii saiu. we ran our ottcnsc
better, we played with intensity
and rebounded well. We had a
couple of turnovers and mistakes
that we didn't need.
"It's a tough loss, but we've
got to bounce back," he said.
USC's record falls to 12-10
overall and 4-4 in the conference.
It was a physical game as
USC's Tony Shaw and Michael
Foster, and Louisville's AllAmerica
center Pervis Ellison all
fouled out. A total of 41 fouls
were committed during the game.
Shaw scored 7 points, and
Foster scored 8 of his 10 points
on the free throw line. Ellison,
who had been averaging 15.6
points per game, was held to 9.
With just under six minutes left
in the game Louisville had taken
an 11-point lead at 54-43, and
Felton called a time-out to settle
his team down. Whatever he said
in the huddle must have worked,
because USC came out and cut
the lead down to 2 points on a
19-foot Terry Dozier jump shot
with 1:09 remaining. Dozier
finished the game leading all
scorers with 22 points and seven
rebounds.
USC walk-on Chris Abboushi
went into the lane and made an
eight-foot jump shot, but
Louisville sealed its win when
senior guard Chris West sank

"1 never feel good when you
have to win on the line, but they
(UL) made them when they had
to," Louisville head coach Denny
Crum said as he watched his team
improve its record to 14-10
overall and 6-2 in the conference.
"Let's not mistake this
Louisville team for a final four
team," Crum said. "Right now
we're struggling to get into the
tournament."
