Student Senate's reallocation oi
$60,000 for Golden Spur inept
Since the discovery that $60,000, allocated last year foi
the Golden Spur, was reallocated to campus groups
several members of Student Senate have learned one of the
Diggesi lessons mcy win icarn 11 mey arc ever going to cntci
professional politics.
They learned to say 4'Oops" and to cover their behind;
in the process.
Unfortunately, this doesn't mean they've risen above the
level of incompetence. Quite the contrary is true. This re
cent and questionable incident points to the fact that then
are several political dilettantes working within the Studeni
Government system. It also points out a lack ol
responsibility.
Statements such as 44 things happen," or "how were wc
supposed to know" simply won't float. Students don'l
deserve such empty excuses.
To have "overlooked" the matter of the Spur is one
thing, but to suggest no one in the senate knew anything
about it is asinine. Weren't some of the present senators ir
office when the money was allocated last year? You bei
they were.
Furthermore, it was said the senate is not bound by the
previous senate's decisions. If legislation approved in the
past is not adhered to, then why even bother having ?
senate? It just doesn't make much sense.
Now it is being said money might be reallocated for the
Golden Spur. Nice try; but after years of inept performance
and sluggish efforts to reopen the Spur, what are we
to expect?
The Golden Spur might as well become a clubhouse foi
those groups that received the Spur's allocation of money:
because students who want a lounge will never get to use il
until some positive steps are taken to change the statu*
quo.
Nothing "illegal" transpired in this recent little fiasco,
but an incident like this doesn't have to be illegal in ordei
to raise doubts about leadership.
The senate must avoid overlooking large sums of money
in the future, if that's possible. The senators must also prove
to students they are serious about their jobs, because
they haven't shown they are serious lately.
If they can't manage to do these things, then they might
lose something besides the money placed in their care ?
their jobs, which will be in jeopardy later this month during
the SG elections.
The "let the chips fall whe?e they may" attitude of the
senate is disturbing. The Spur issue has dragged on for toe
long and we would like something concrete to be done. 11
the senate can't handle that, then maybe the Feb. 25 SC
elections can.

of the rigorous schedule they are
subjected to. Not only do they
have to train year-round, even in
the summer while we're lounging
on the beach, with weights, practice,
and yes, diet, but they are
also subjected to a great risk of
personal injury. They should not
also have to suffer the attacks
levied against them in The
Gamecock.
Students have attacked athletes
throughout this year. Students
were enraged when it was found
that the university planned to ^
renovate the Roost this summer,
even though they were not paying
for any part of it. This is also the
case with the food the athletes
cat. In one year of home games,
the football team brings in
millions of dollars in ticket sales,
and in scholarship donations.
This income covers all of their expenses.
Concession sales at the
games also aid the university by
funding the president's discretionary
fund. ^
I would like to have dinner
with Todd Ellis too, but I'm not
one of the people that makes the
money to pay for their food, so
I'll just stick to the Russell House
cafeteria. I work out three days a
week with weights and swim
every day, and I don't have
hunger from eating in the Russell
Mouse.
We have some of the best
possible treatment, especially
since they are paying for it.
