win at L.ittlejohn Coliseum on
Feb. 7.
"We can't get into a run-andgun
game. Wc have to execute
our offense, and we're definitely
gonna have to play with intensity,"
said Dozier before the game.
After the Tigers roared away to
a 74-52 win over the Gamecocks,
Ellis knew he and his staff had
guessed right.
"Our staff knew pressure was
the way wc had to play South
Carolina," Ellis said.
Pressure was indeed the key as
the Gamecocks were forced to
use nearly all of the 45-second
clock on almost every occasion in
the first half.
"Our defense carried our
ballclub today," Ellis said after
seeing his 12th-ranked Tigers
nnct tlirir J1 win of the srn^nn
in 23 tries.
The Tigers, however, had trouble
keeping the Gamecoeks at bay
in the first half.
Do/.ier opened the scoring with
a 18-foot jumper from the right
wing to put the Gamecocks up.
C1 e ni s o n ' s Jerry P r y o r
answered with a shot in the lane
to tie the score.
The remainder of the half saw
the Gamecocks and the flustricken
Tigers slug it out. Clemson
was unable to open up its
3-point attack or unleash the inside
game of center Horace
Grant, who was said to have the
flu.
Clcmson led by only 2 points at
halftime, 27-25.
During the halftime break,
tllis told his Tigers to go inside
and get physical a little to open
up the outside jumpshot.
"It was a conscious decision,"
said Clemson guard Michael
Tait, who hit five 3-pointers in
the second half to help the Tigers
run away from USC.
"They were collapsing. Once
we got it inside, it opened up the
outside," Tait said after the
game.
