Activists in

By Th* Associated Prwt
CIJMMING, Ga. ? A group
of 75 civil rights activists, mostly
black, visited seven white chnr
dies Sunday in Forsyth County,
the scene of a massive march
eight days earlier protesting racial
intolerance.
There were no incidents at any
of the churches, according to
Sheriff Wesley Walraven.
Sheriff's deputies and other
police escorted groups of activists
to the services.
The Rev. Hosea Williams, the
Atlanta city councilman and
former lieutenant to Martin
Luther King Jr. who helped
organize the 25,000 marchers on
Jan. 24, led a group of 15 blacks
attending Sunday services at
Cumming's all-white First Baptist
Church.
Williams and his colleagues,
arriving at the crowded church
after the 11 a.m. service had
begun, were seated in a small

More than a half-dozen reporters
sat in another balcony opposite.
Pastor B.V. Franklin Jr.
greeted the group and apologized
for their seats: "As you can see,
we're a little bit crowded."
Franklin's sermon did not
mention race relations, but he
preached a message of tolerance
among Christians concerning
Baptist concerns such as drinking,
dancing and smoking.
When we look down on people
because they have a different
viewpoint, "We don't see all the
facts," the pastor said.

"I think the sermon was very H

Franklin said blacks have I
visited his church before.
After the service, Williams and
the other activists were escorted H
by police as they rode out of town I

"Hopefully, we can go to For- ,

before leaving Atlanta.
Forsyth County was home to I
hundreds of blacks until 1912, I
when white groups chased them j
out after rape and murder allegations
against three black men. p
The sheriffs department has said
it knows of no blacks currently '
living in the county, a largely
rural area rapidly becoming a ?*
