Divestment. Continued from pag
The principles were issued by the Rev. Leon
Sullivan of Philadelphia in 1977. The latest
revision, issued in November 1984, is meant
to nromote racial enunlitv in emnlnvmcnl for
American companies operating in South
Africa and to creatc programs for improving
living conditions among the non-white
population and contributing to the end of
apartheid.
Sullivan, however, recently said the principles
were a failure, Alexander Gray,
spokesman for the liberation coalition, said.
"He said the principles weren't working,
and that if there is not a significant change in
South Africa, he may ask for total divestment
and an economic embargo by the end of
1987," Gray said.
Total divestment wouldn't work for the
Educational Foundation, Vlahoplus said.
"We have a fiduciary responsibility to the
university community to invest our money as
wisely as possible."

good in South Africa," he said. "Total
divestment, I think, is a moot point."
Vlahoplus said the foundation has discussed
total divestment and reviews the situation
at every meeting of its executive board, of
which USC President James Holderman is a
member. "However, 1 doubt our policy of
partial divestment would change." he said.
"The people who favor total divestment
say this will force the South African government
to take positive action on apartheid.
We, however, would be penalizing the companies
who are trying to do some good in
South Africa."
Vlahoplus declined to say which companies
the foundation has invested in, who the
group's board members arc, or when and
where they meet.
"Doesn't that show that they arc feeling
pressure?" Snclson said. "If they weren't
feeling pressure, they wouldn't have agreed to
partial divestment. They know that something
needs to be done."

Gray said USC administrators are difficult
to contact for discussion on the issue. "I
haven't been able to get an appointment with
him (Holdennan). I know he's cancelled
several meetings with student groups on this
issue for various reasons."
"1 find it awfully funny that the U.S. has
sanctions, South Carolina has divested, and
USC has nothing," Snclson said. "We want
to know when Holderman can meet with us
and the community on this matter. This is an
open invitation."
Vlahoplus said the Educational Foundation
represents the entire USC community. "I
believe we will stick with this policy. I think Xi
we've done the right thing."
