Big ones are
So far this year, Carolina
sports can be summed up with
one phrase: The "big one" the
Gamecocks "almost" won.
Sport number one: Football.
In 1986, USC went 3-6-2 in a
season tilled with games the

The Gamecocks started their
season of almosts against the
Bulldogs of Georgia on Sept.
27.
In Williams-Brice Stadium,
with over 70,000 fans twisting
and shouting and swaying the
stadium to the Carolina beat,
the Gamecocks almost defeated
the Bulldogs. That loss
represented mc urst 01 a nost ol
games the Gamccocks almost
won.
In a nationally televised game
on Oct. 4, the Gamecocks
almost beat then third-ranked
Nebraska.
USC almost followed that
loss with a victory over Virginia
Tech in Blacksburg. The
Gamecocks, with usually consistent
placekicker Scott Hagler
missing three field goals
(including the potential gamewinner
with six seconds left on
tnc clock) tell into a 27-27 tic.
Oli well, there's another one the
Gamecocks almost won.
Then, after an easy victory
over East Carolina under their
belts, the Gamecocks traveled
to Raleigh to take on the
Wolfpack of North Carolina
State. USC and the Wolfpack
fought neck and neck before
the Gamecocks bowed 22-21.
USCr made a great comeback
only to see the Wolfpack get an
extra play with no time left on
the clock. Oh well, there's
another one the Gamecocks
almost won.
The Gamecocks returned to
almost victorious form for the
Clemson game after Jekyll and
Hyde performances against
I Florida State and Wake Forest.
This game capped USC's
almost winning football season
j with another almost victory,

and the Clemson-Carolina
game finished in an empty
21-21 tie. Oh well, there's
another one the Gamecocks

USC didn't finish almost
winning just because football
season was over.
Sport number two: Soccer.
The Gamecocks rolled all
season long before meeting
Duke in the first round of the
regionals.
The Blue Devils must have
had a hex on the Gamecocks.
Duke had two Carolina players
taken off the field on a stretcher
before knocking USC out 3-2.
Oh well, there's another one the
Gamecocks almost won.
The Carolina lumps continued.
Sport number three:
Volleyball.
USC, goddesses of the Metro
Tournament for the past few
years, needed a few important
victories along with a little luck
to receive a bid to play in the
NCAA regionals.
The important victories
didn't come and the Lady

to lose to Florida State. Oh
well, there's another one the
Gamecocks almost won.
Now the Gamecocks are trying
to change things. Sport
number four: Men's
basketball.
USC, behind sophomore Bill
Vernau's 20 points, dropped
Eckcrd College 85-68 in the first
game of the season. (Don't
worry fans. We're not quite a
national power just yet.)
Last, but not least or forgotten
? sport number five:
Women's basketball.
With sophomore Martha
Parker and freshman center
Schonna Banner carrying most

Gamecocks have won four of
their first six games.
Uh oh! Maybe basketball will
help USC break their streak of
almosts. Maybe.

Banner then went on a tear,
scoring 8 of the next 10 Lady
Gamecock points as USC wrestled
the lead back.
The two teams traded points as
neither team could put the game
away.
The Lady Gamecocks went on
:op for good with 1:41 left when
Parker struck from six feet away
for a 57-56 lead.
"I made it real specific what
we were gonna do," Wilson said.
"We wanted to get it to
Vlartha."
"Down the stretch Dawn
(Raab) did the best job getting
the ball inside," Parker said.
"When you get it inside, it's easy
after that."
Raab, a junior guard from Irmo,
led all players with nine
assists.
USC clung to the lead for the
rest of the game, getting back up
to the final margin of 4 on a free
throw by senior forward Tammy
Harvey with one second left.
Banner, playing in her sixth intercollegiate
game, impressed
Wilson.
"She's a player. The tougher it
gets, the tougher she gets,"
Wilson said.
"It was tough but it was exiting,"
Banner said. "I felt a little
nervous, but if you aren't nerL/nn?

The Lady Gamccocks take an
