East Carol
I By WAYNE WASHINGTON
Assistant sports editor
In the press room of Frank
McGuirc Arena, Monday, USC's
first-year head man George
Felton had a familiar feeling for
Gamecock coaches ? the feeling
of defeat.
After a season-opening 85-68
win over Eckerd College Nov. 29,
B the former Georgia Tech assistant
coach saw his Gamecocks
lose their first game of the year in
a 67-57 defeat at the hands of
East Carolina.
The Gamecocks opened ihe
ECU game with a barrage of outside
shots. Sophomore forward
Terry Dozier, who had a game
high 23 points, hit his first three
field goals and USC jumped out
j?! to an early 12-6 lead. Forward
daii Darryl Martin out-muscled the
S Pirates in controlling the boards
as the Gamecocks continued to
dominate the game.
Freshman guard Reggie Smith
made it seem as 'f the Gamecocks
i were on their way to a rout when
he slipped past a Pirate defender
en route to an electrifying twogf*
hand slam dunk.
Wfi On their next possesion
^ I however, the Pirates came back.
ECU's Derrick Battle drove
>3jL through the Carolina lane for a
1 hh two-hand jam of his own and the
Gamecock lead was cut to 10 at
' the 10:40 mark of the first half.
The Gamecocks, minus the services
of suspended senior guard
Michael Foster, commitcd crucial
turnovers and fouls and the
Pirates closed the gap to just 8
points on center Leon Bass' layup
icock at the 6:16 mark.

3-pointers, continued to close the

margin until Terry Dozicr slammed
in a lose ball to put USC ahead
by seven. ECU's Reed Lose
answered with a 3-pointcr and the
Pirates trailed by only 4 points.
The Gamecocks withstood a
Pirate 3-point onslaught in
holding on for a 36-32 halftinic
lead.
At the beginning of the second
half, Martin, who finished with a
game -high 13 rebounds,
reasserted his control on the inside.
He scored the first four
baskets for USC and the lead was
back to 7.
The Pirates stepped up their
defensive pressure and the
Gamecocks began to commit
more turnovers. In addition to
the turnovers and fouls, USC
seemed to stop shooting from the
field.
"Success comes through opportunities.
Carolina got some
oppurtunitics they didn't
capitalize on. I wished they
would have taken a nuirk^r
shot," Felton said after the
game.
After Pirate forward Blue Edwards,
who had a team-high 2,0
points, slammed ECU to their
first lead of the game, the crowd
became anxious. Each time the
Gamecocks touched the ball in
shooting position, they looked to
pass instead.
As the Carolina shooting or
non-shooting woes continued,
ECU built a 6-point lead with
1:02 left. Guard Terry Gould, attempting
to provide some of the
leadership lost due to Foster's
suspension, hit a 3-pointer, but it
was too late.
The Gamecocks travel to
Wisconsin on Dec. 4 .
