Salaries of distinguished visiting professors at
USC will not be higher than those of full professors.
according to a policy passed by USC's board of
trustees during a special meeting Friday.
The salaries of present full professors arc $52,000
to $54,000 for each academic year, which includes
only fall and spring semesters, not summer sessions.
9 Jehan Sadat's salary for three semesters at USC was
$207,000 plus expenses.

During the meeting, USC President lames
Holderman asked the board to set a limit on the
salaries.
He said a limit on the visiting distinguished pro
fessors program was needed so that "it would be
clearly demonstrated to all concerned that the
university is in full control of the expenses and the
costs of bringing the distinguished visitors to the
campus."
This control is absolutely essential to the future of
the program, he said.

it to continue to bring credit to the university and insights

our campuses."
The proposal passed by a unanimous vote.
Student Government President Amy Houser said
in a telephone interview with The Gamecock that
the policy is reasonable and fair. "It is fair to other
faculty," she said. "A lot of them were disturbed by
the news of Sadat's salary. I'm glad to see that it
was done."
It will allow the distinguished visiting professors
program to continue without the expenses and costs
of the program increasing, she said.
Houser said the new limit on salaries doesn't
mean the end of her campaign for a voting student
