The fog covered the city so
completely that one might have
collided with an iceberg or
bumped into Jack the Ripper.
But chances arc they too, if
properly attired, would have
been on their way to see the
USC Chamber Orchestra perform
a free concert in Drayton

man.
The concert opened with the
Concerto Grosso, Opus 6, No.
8 by Arcangelo Corelli. It moved
gently through the strings
and harpsichord and was very
relaxing.
The Concerto for Two
Violins in A Minor, Opus 3,
No. 8 by Antonio Vivaldi was
next, with concertmaster Jose
Santos Perez and conductor
Donald Portnoy leading the orchestra
with a lively violin duet.
After a brief intermission the
orchestra played Violin Concerto
in E Major, Opus 8, No. 1 by
Antonio Vivaldi, (Spring from
the Four Seasons). The music
worked its way throuRh the str
ings as a hummingbird might go
from flower to flower. Truly,
this piece itself is spring.
The concert closed with the
Holberg Suite, Opus 40 by Edvard
Grieg.

Hey, groovy guys and groovy
gals! Wanna make a hit record?
Well, let's let Uncle Ric show us
how!
Step 1: Take all your favorite
Cars albums and set them on fire.
Step 2: Stack them on ton of
each other so that they smoulder
into one greasy mass of vinyl.
Step 3: Voila! The new Ric
Ocasek album, complete with
The Cars as a tight and relatively
well-known backup band.
Is this just a subtle hint from
rock's favorite vampire? Sorry,
but I would settle for being amused
rather than comatose. Using
the rest of The Cars just makes
me wonder how set in his ways
this Ric creature is, it doesn't
seem like he's even trying. Why
should he, he'll sell a million or
two and buy a new Porsche. Give
me the sequel to Heartbeat City
anyday, just tell me that its the
real thing, OK? Leave me some
ill - -
illusions.

Ben's engaged (just thought
you'd like to know), and wrote
most of the album with his new
fiancee. I have to admit it is an
admirable debut, and I am
curious as to how much input
Diane Grey Page has in this offering.
The music is very good
and quite well thought out, but I
did miss a real bass track (instead
of the MIDI bass stuff that

"The Lace" is probably my
pick of the lot, though. "Too
Hot To Stop" shows a neat edge.
Maybe we should've expected
some heavy breathing on "Stay

concerned, this is a hot first effort,
worthy of a few good
singles. Keep goin' Ben, my

When Lenny White shows up
programming instead of playing,
I seriously contemplate one of
two actions: crowing about this
marvelous technology that allows
us to do so much so well, or bemoaning
the fact that those
heartless machines have intruded
into jazz.
Yes, Virginia (and Connecticut,
for that matter), IBM has
contracted toe-jam footfalls.
This is a very clean album, thanks
to digital mastering and mixing,
and winds up on the home stereo
more than on the Walkthing.
Applause for Lisa Fischer's
vocal track on ''Gone
Hollywood," a song that
would've been redundant if done
in rock, but has a certain per
tincnce in jazz. Nicky Moroch
smokes on his guitar solo in "3
a.m.," a song that sent me back
to Rick's Cafe, after hours, sharing
memories with Bogey in the
punctuated silences of the searchlights.
. . a fine album by a
past master of jazz. My only
reservations arc about the use of
computers in a mainly improvisational
area of music. If it works,
great, and my hat's off to you.
