most of the leadership this year.
Foster's backeourt partner will
be one of four players: 6-4 senior
Steve Holland, who played well
as a reserve last year and is
reported to be in better shape this
season; 6-6 sophomore Bil Ver
nau, wno saw limited duty during
the '85-'86 campaign, but who
could come in and give USC a
long range scoring threat; 6-2
junior colllege transfer Terry
Gould, who averaged just under
14 points a game and shot 57 percent
last year; and 6-4 freshman
Reggie Smith of Rutherfordton,
N.C., who was coach Felton's
first signcc at USC. He averaged
18.5 points a game his senior year
in high school, and was a
1,000-point scorer for his career.

members of last season's Metro
Conference championship squad.
Senior starters Brantley
Southers, Sharon Gilmorc and
Mindy Ballou combined to
average 50 points and 21 rebounds
a game last year, and they
provided leadership for an otherwise
young and inexperienced
team.
USC had only nine healthy
players for most of last season,
but still finished 19-11. They advanced
to the first round of the
women's National Collegiate
Athletic Association tournament,
losing 78-77 in overtime to Middle
Tennessee State.
South Carolina might have a
problem with depth again this
year, with only 10 players on the
roster. If the team suffers any
serious injuries, the bench
strength will again be tested.
Still, there is enough talent to
make USC a strong contender to
repeat as league champs. To do
it, the Lady Gamecocks must rely
on several players to get the job
done.
Sophomore guard Martha
Parker was the Metro Newcomer
of thfr Year in 1985-86, and she is
one of the keys to USC's success.
The former Hammond Academy

i USC received 32 points, only two
points behind current Metro
3 Conference champions Florida
i State.
, After last weekend's loss to
^ Tennessee, it is now unlikely the
:> Lady Gamecocks will receive a
h bid to the NCAA tournament,
3 however, it is still a possibility.

Dawn Raab has seen limited
playing time the past two seasons
as Ballou's backup at point
guard, but should become a
starter this year. The junior from
Irmo appeared in 27 games in
1985-86, with one start.
Tammy Harvey was probably
the most improved player on the
Lady Gamccocks last season. The
senior forward from Pittsburgh
came on during the middle of the
season to provide strong rebounding
and timely scoring. Harvey
was fourth on the team in rebounds
at 5.6 per game, and
scored nearly five points a game.
Monica Williams, whom
Harvey replaced in the lineup,
will try to come back from a knee
injury that required surgery last
season. The junior from Heath
Springs played the first six games
of thz season for USC before getting
hurt, and averaged 10.2
points and 6.5 rebounds. Because
she was redshirted last season she
has two years of eligibility left at
USC.

The 24-year-old Columbia native
led the Metro Conference in rebounding
with nine boards per
game. Martin also averaged 11.2
points per game while starting all
28 contests. He can play both
power forward and center,
despite being only 6-7.
The key to the entire lineup is
Perry Dozier, and the center position.
Terry's 6-10 twin brother
made significant improvement
last year, and should continue to
develop with more playing time.
Last season, he appeared in 26
games, and made three starts. He

If he can learn to play center

The talent is there for USC ?
the question is whether that talent
collectively can make up for the
loss of the three senior leaders.
The season begins November

The field includes USC,
Georgia Southern, East Carolina

at Clemson December 6.
