In the era of popular music, few bands have
had the staying power of the San Francisco band,
Journey.
Throughout its 13 years of existence,
Journey's albums have been powerhouse compilations
of rock 'n' roll guitars and soft rock
vocals, making them famous with pop singles
such as "Don't Stop Believin'," "Faithfully"
and "Send Her My Love."
The five original members of Journey started

touring on their own. With Infinity (1978), Steve
Perry came in as their lead singer.
But Journey has been pared down to Perry,
Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon, all of whom
have met successes with other bands or on solo
albums.
Journey's biggest selling LP, Escape (1981)
sold 6 million copies.. They released four singles
& from that album, "Who's Crying Now," "Don'?

Now they're on tour with Raised on

meant for radio listeners, according to Perry.
Opening for Journey is Glass Tiger from

Let's see what's playing at the
Russell House Theater this
weekend: "42nd Street" is a very
early musical, made in the 1930's ,
and starring no one spectacular.
But it is interesting to look C
back at the granddaddy of rock ti

"The Odd Couple" plays ti

racks, creating beautiful and textured
songs with a very danceable
bassline that threatens to break
3ut and slap the listener in the
face with its intensity, as do the
searing guitar lines that creep in,
;rawl through the song and then
;rupt.
But it is the quieter songs that
make Shriekback stand out from
the pack as one of the better
bands around. They adjust to the
differing moods with remarkable
;asc and fluidity, showing a versatility
few bands are comfortable
with.

members are former USC
students and the band evolved
from the stress lead vocalist King
Cotton, a self-proclaimed corporate
assassin, encountered pursuing
his MBA here. King Cotton
began writing songs to relieve the
stress and then picked up some
friends to start playing with them
for fun, and the result bccame the
glory that is Slavdik.
The music of Slavdik is difficult
to pigeonhole at best, fitting
no specific genre or style.
What it is, is pop oriented, but
never dull. The standout here is
very clearly the title cut, "The
Turk," a quirky and very wellcrafted
track about the life of a
Middle Easterner and his camel.
A close second is "I Hate Party
Talkin"' a song that discusses the
ridiculous small taiw pvchanoorl
at parties.
All the tracks are filled with a
sense of humor and the obvious
love Slavdik has for music and
what they're doing ? as they
clearly have to love this, considering
the record is a result of
the members pooling their own
finances. But above all, the
record contains music that is of
excellent quality, and is more
than comparable with other
records on the local and national
levels. Highly recommended.

"2001: A Space Odyssey":
People love to come to this

influential in its use of special effects,
and also in its fairly significant
imagery. By director Stanley
Kubrick, it asks the question
"How did man evolve."
