Final tribute
State's Vietnam War veterans
deserve their granite monument
It's about time the state has erected a lasting tribute to its
citizens who gave their lives in Vietnam.
The South Carolina Vietnam Memorial and Memorial
h'ark, located on a graded park overlooking the Congaree
River, was dedicated Saturday morning. Numerous South
Carolina dignitaries, including Sen. Strom Thurmond,
Charles F. Bolden (who flew combat missions during the
war) and Ret. Gen. William Westmoreland, were on hand
to praise the more than 1,000 South Carolinians who were
killed or missing in action during the Vietnam War.
Although it is little solace to the families and friends of
those who never returned from the iinnnniilar war thr?
72.5 foot, high, polished granite monument now stands as a
symbol of their courage. The names of those who were killed
or missing are chiseled into the towering structure.
But why did it take 11 years to finally acknowledge the
patriotism and courage exhibited by those who fought in
Vietnam? Weren't their contributions to our country important
enough?
Part of the reason why it has taken so long to pay tribute
to these people is because of the unpopularity of the war in
this country. But the unpopularity doesn't erase the
fatalities and casualties, as well as the suffering endured by
soldiers' families back home.
Statues heralding those who fought in the Revolutionary
War, Civil War and both World Wars can be found
throughout the state. Now the list is complete with the addition
of the new Vietnam Memorial and Memorial Park.

I feel (correct me if I'm wrong) that the job
of running a university not only entails improving
the facilities but running it efficiently.
This should include keeping the school
within a given budget by controlling expenses.
This apparently is not being done very well as
seen by the annual tuition increases. USC
President James Holderman and his administration
asked for $117 million for the
1986-87 school year which is what he feels is
what he needs . . to operate an institution
on the move."
Well, I would like to find out from Holderman
what is more important to him: keeping
this institution on the move or keeping his student
body. With financial aid decreasing and
inflation doing what it always does, it is getting
harder every year to afford a higher
education; and while the university having a
national reputation is important, so is keeping
an education affordable. If this appointed
head cannot do his job efficiently then he
should be replaced.
The saddest thing of all is that the people of
the state have no control over Holderinan and
how he runs this .state-supported university.
He only answers to the Hoard of Trustees(who
answer to no one). One would think that a
state government, which would give S106
million to a university would like to sec that it

So it seems that the state Budget Control
Board may only allocate this $106 million,
which is $11 million short of what Holderman

ridding a part of this deficit (deficit ? that

Student Government President Amy
Houser seems to feel that the fault for this
possible tuition increase should be placed on
the legislature. I feel she may be missing the
point; the government allocates what it feels
the university needs to efficiently operate. If
the school administration cannot operate with
the allotted amount of money then it is the ad- ^
ministration's fault, and the student body
should not have to pay for their inefficiencies.
If letters arc sent to legislators (as Houser
suggested) these would include a demand for
stricter control of the university's expenditures
and the president who O.K.'s them,
but not pleas for more state funding. It would
be nice to sec a petition sent to the board of
trustees signed by the many people (myself included)
who could not return or would not
return next year if such a tuition increase were
installed. The board of trustees may then get ~
sonic idea of how much a tuition increase will
hurt instead of help. Would it be hoping too
much to say they might re-evaluate their undying
support for our chief administrator? I
hone not!
