i Sports Friday, October 24, 1986 7 I , R? D: If you're not maybe you'll "Soccer is boring to watch. All they do is run up and down the field, and if you're lucky, you may see them score once." Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's P everybody's excuse for why they don't go to soccer games. It's boring. But every sport is boring if you look at the right (or wrong) way. Football: It's just a bunch of 300 pound steroids that need three hours to do 12 minutes of real action. Baseball: All they do is stand around and spit and scratch themselves. Hockey: It's twelve grown lutn uii ice sKaics cnasmg a giant checkcr around while they try to kill each other. Wrestling: Hockey without chcckers or ice skates. Auto racing/track/cycling: Watch everybody run around in circles and hope they fall down or crash or something. See, everything is boring if your looking for the wrong things. The reason nobody scores in soccer is becuase of goalies. Those are the guys that throw their bodies in front r*f so miin an hour shots and hope they don't get kicked in the head or ; somewhere much worse. A bunch of guys running around isn't what makes it boring, it's what makes it exciting. Constant action. No timeouts, no huddles, no screwing around. The action keeps building up all through the game until the rare moments when a goal is k . scored and the action reaches its climax. The crowd goes crazy and the team gets a surge of momentum unlike any other sport. After Cross r.nuntrv t - J annual Carolina | By JEFF SHREWSBURY Sports editor USC's cross country team will host the second annual Carolina Invitational Cross Country meet Saturday at Fort Jackson's Hilton Field. "We're really just hanging back toning up for the conference meet, Nov. 8." The courses will be run on the Graduation Ceremony field and will be 3.1 miles for the women and 5 miles for the men. The players, the fans, probably even the dogs that chase frisbecs on the other side of the field. Speaking of which, that's the other great thing about soccer games- the atmosphere. People and dogs play frisbee on the field at halftiine. Little kids run around about as much as the players do. And hey, where else can you spend a sunny Sunday afternoon finishing off your leftover beer from the last night and watching through the fence as the Gamecocks blow another team away. And you can heckle. And heckle. And heckle. Just ask Duke's 5'4" midfielder, Tony Valenti. The fans got on his back and never got off. The poor guy probably never wants to come back to The Graveyard again, even if his team did win. USC head coach Mark Ber son doesn't overlook the support the crowd gives, either. "Playing at home means a lot to the players because of the support," Berson said. It shows, too because the Gamecocks have lost only three home games in three years. You're probably expecting me to finish this column off with a real rah rah, let's support the team ending. Nah, that would be pretty silly. You're all big enough to make up your own minds. And with my luck, the next game probably really will be boring. Just don't give me any more excuses. There really isn't any boring sport.
