students' writing itself. Ilccausc of the diversity of
academic background of IJSC's students, instructors
cannot assume any common background in
English.
"You must provide the background for students
before saying anything about what you're
teaching," Howard-Mill said.
USC offers a variety ol ways to help students with
writing problems, such as writing courses,
workshops and the Writing Center.
The Writing Center offers free one-on-one
tutorials for anyone having problems with their
writing. The center conducts between 1,()()() and
1,100 tutorials each semester. About 12 to 15 public
workshops are offered each semester, also, with
about 1,000 students and community residents
attending.
A unique feature USC now offers is the "writers'
hotline," a nationally known call-in service to
answer writing-related questions. The service has
received thousands of calls from all across the nation,
even though the number is not toll-free.

IJSC's writing program has been cited by College
i.nyjish as one of the best in the nation. The
magazine is on of I he leading journals in the field of
English, according to Lynn.
Because of the national attention of the writing
program, many universities arc using USC facilities
to pattern their own programs, Lynn said, citing
Greenville Technical College's proposed visit to
gather tips lo start its own writing center.
" The strength of the Writing Center is its staff,"
Lynn said. "liven though we've had to struggle the
past couple of years to staff the freshmen English
classes, we've still managed to have excellent
instructors."
New on the agenda for the Writing Center arc introductions
to computer word processing, a
workshop entitled "Writing Strategies and the
Word Processor," and more public workshops.
Although LJSC offers a large amount of help to
students with writing difficulties, "basically if one
wants to learn to write, one has to do a lot of
writing," Howard-Mill said.
