McKissick Museum may seem cold and
foreboding on the outside, but once inside its
I treasures come alive.
Included in the museum's layout are a geology
museum, an art gallery and a museum of education.
& In addition, the past is being discovered through
Movietone News reels, a gift from Twentieth!
Century Fox.

iMcKissick Museum has grown from primarily an
outlet for exhibiting works of students and faculty
since its founding in 1976, to a museum known for
I its work with South Carolina folk culture, according
to Lynn Myers, chief curator of the museum.
McKissick Museum has six year-round exhibits
featuring aspects of South Carolina culture:
The art gallery houses many works of state and
ii regional artists. Upcoming shows include the works
| of graphics professor Onyile Onyile and other USC
i faculty.
"I've always had the ideas in my mind, but 1
didn't put them down on paper until this project,"
p Onyile said.
University archives contain important records,
$ photographs and personal papers that showcase the
^ university's history.
Regional and state history museum contains
k many Columbia and South Carolina artifacts.
The geology museum contains a collection of
minerals of the South.

Besides these permanent exhibitions, the museum
offers temporary showings throughout the year. According

McKissick also offers a permanent changing exhibition
of twentieth century Movietone news reels. ^
"The Great American Hero: 1919-1963" is now be- w
ing shown.
McKissick Museum is more than art exhibitions
alone. Myers said other departments 01 ine museum
include "educational programs for the general
public and summer programs."
"We have adult programs which include lectures
and art classes," Myers said.
The museum also provides an Outreach program
for art to be taken to members of the community
who are unable to come to the museum due to illness
or handicap.
The museum has several exhibitions open. Myers
said "Row Upon Row" is the major exhibition this ^
fall. This showing is the culmination of two years of
work and research featuring 50 of the best examples
