Doctor says mosquitos spread AIDS
ATLANTA ? A south Florida doctor charged Tuesday that the
Centers for Disease Control is ignoring evidence that mosquitoes
may spread tne virus tnat causes ailjs.
A CDC report to be published this week concludes there is no
evidence to suggest that mosquitoes played any role in acquired immune
deficiency syndrome cases in western Palm Beach County,
Ma.
"They had their minds made up before they came down here,"
said Dr. Mark Whiteside, co-director of the Miami-based Institute
for Tropical Medicine.
Mosquitoes spread some diseases, such as malaria, by extracting
blood from a disease victim and injecting the contaminated blood
into another person.

ATLANTA ? Former President Jimmy Carter pointed to his
own life as an underdog candidate Tuesday as he told students
touring the new Carter Presidential Library that they must never be
afraid to set high goals for themselves.
Forty-four Georgia public school students who had won statewide
essay contests on Carter's life sat on the library floor in front
of huge displays tracing Carter's life as the former president, sitting
on a stool, spoke about his life and answered their questions.
Carter told elementary school students that he was often teased
as a boy as he went around his southwest Georgia hometown of
Plains selling nickel bags of peanuts.
Woman shot after stabbing policeman
NORTH CHARLESTON ? A Charleston woman allegedly
stabbed a police officer in the chest with a barbecue fork and was
then shot to death after turning to attack another officer,
authorities said.
Hazel Lee Tate, 53, stabbed North Charleston Police Officcr
John Craddock on Monday before being shot when she threatened
i to attack Lt. Lettie Whitehead, police said.
Craddock had a chest wound, North Charleston police Chief
J.A. Cannon Jr. said.
The shooting and stabbing occurred about 10 p.m. at an apart
ment in North Charleston while (Juicers Harry Mowder and
Timothy Cummings were answering a domestic call at the apartment,
Captain William New Jr. said.
