Newswatch program Saturday night received
a surprise ? USC President James Holderman
was the guest.
Holderman spoke about various issues affecting
the university on the news talk show,
hosted by WIS news anchor Ed Carter. He
was questioned by WIS reporter Sean Callebs,
Scott Johnson of The State newspaper, and
Tony McVeigh of the South Carolina
i Network.
Holderman responded about disclosing
Jehan Sadat's salary: "If we were to begin to
reveal faculty salaries whether they be
distinguished visiting lecturers or regular fulltime
faculty, we would begin to lose the best
ones in rapid succession."
He said he wouldn't want to be responsible
for those losses, nor was he obligated to take
that responsibility under the Freedom of Information
Act.
"Anything below the department head's
salary is protected as privileged information. I
don't think you'd find one in 100 members of

what it is that he or she makes or what our expenses
are in having them as a part of our
organization. We will not do it, and I do not
believe that it would be appropriate for us to
go beyond that in this kind of question
because there is litigation pending."
Carter asked Holderman about the asbestos
problem at USC buildings. "We think it's
minimal, and we hope it is. We've all got our
fingers crossed; nobody really knows what the
long-term effect of asbestos is going to be
yet," he said.
Holderman said the lengthy process of
removing asbestos from Columbia Hall will
require moving residents elsewhere during the
spring semester. "There is now some response
on the part of the state that it's one (problem)
that we need to solve and solve it directly."
Holderman said the National Collegiate
Athletic Association has not notified him of
launching an investigation into USC's basketball
program. He said USC has its own investigation
under way, and that they hope to
have a report by the end of the month.

own affairs directly and quite quickly," he
said.
Callebs asked Holderman why USC's
educational board does not follow the lead of
South Carolina, Columbia, and several major
universities by divesting its financial dealings
in South Africa.
"The university has taken a very strong
position, as has all of the foundations
associated with us, aRainst apartheid, but the
question is, 'Do we pull out economically?'"
Holderman said.
"Remember, we're talking about companies
like DuPont, IBM and the banks, for
example. A banker told me the other day, 'If
you really divest, you should not put any
money in any American bank, because we
don't know who it is we're doing business
with.' It's an unanswerable question. We
think we've taken the right position."
