The music, loud and upbeat, can be heard
pounding through the wall of the gym next
door. Class is in session in gym 307 of USC's
Blatt Physical Education Center, and inside,
students shuffle and shake to the tunes of Patti
Labelle and the Pointer Sisters.
Not much is unusual about this particular
Summer II course, except maybe that most of
the students are men ? very big men. They're
the members of USC's football team, and the
class is Physical Education iu/, otherwise
known as aerobic dance.
The Gamecocks have been taking the
course the past three summers as a get-inshape
preview to their grueling, twice-a-day
preseason practices, which begin Friday. Bonnie
Miller, who has taught the course since its
inception, said aerobic dance can help players
improve both flexibility and agility.
"Out of the hour, we spend at least 25
minutes just stretching," she said. "Hopefully,
they see an increase in flexibility. Also,
they get aerobic training and we do
choreographed steps that require somewhat
fast footwork ? much more so than a lot of
aerobic exercise classes. So ideally, they also
see some changes in agility."
Nose guard Roy Hart, a starter in 1984 who
is coming off a knee injury that sidelined him
last year, said the class has helped him readjust
to physical activity.
"It really stretches you out and gets your
muscles in shape for the season," he said. "It
especially gets you ready for two-a-days,
because those practices are really intense.
"The aerobics help prepare you for that,
because the class is geared to help your flexibility
and coordination, which is something
you definately need in football."
Although the class is not designed for the
football team, Miller said the athletes tend to
perform better than non-players.
"There are other students in the class, but I
think that being athletes, the football players
tend to be better coordinated," she said.
"They seem to pick up the steps more
quickly."
3 After several songs and countless dance
steps in the class, a few players begin to show
fatigue. Tackle Brendan McCormack slowly
I bounccs and skips to the music as he moves
l! toward the bleachers, then dumps his 6-6,
j 268-pound frame against the metal seats.
