j Pryor is rarely seen doing his
great stand-up comedy here. Ini
stead, the focus is offstage, on
* the changes over time which lead
to his character's near selfl
destruction. He may have felt
: uneasy playing experiences so
close to his own, but none of that
shows. He gives his best perfor;
mance to date.
This film is not always pleasant
i to watch. There is nudity and
vulgarity, as well as unsettling
, views of drug use, emotional turmoil
and burned flesh.
Everything is realistic, whether
easy to watch or not. Pryor, in
his directorial debut, has placed
much of himself into Dancer's
character for the audience to
judge. It's a selfless, honorable

Don't see 'Holl

"Hollywood Vicc Squad!" the advertisements
blare. "It's a long way from Miami."
It's a long way from being a good film, too. If the
filmmakers are trying to say this film is rougher and
tougher and better than Miami Vice, then they are
deluding themselves.
This film is different from Vice because, beinc a
film, it can get away with gratuitous use of female
anatomy.
It does.
It can also show more blood than a TV show, and
does it ever.
The stories arc so trite and overused that one
wonders why the filmmakers bothered. One part of
the plot has Carrie Fisher playing the female cop
trying to prove herself to two male partners.

Another part of the plot shows a loving mother
searching for her runaway daughter, who, of
course, has become a drug addict and hooker and is
the hottest pro on the street.
Frank Gorshin olays the* pimp. He must have
gone home every night with a bad taste in his mouth
from all the profanity he is forced to utter by this utterly
mundane script.
Fisher is a better actress than this role shows. She
should choose her roles more carefully.
If you want to sec Miami Vice with bare breasts,
then "Hollywood Vice Squad" is for you. Otherwise,
stay home, tape some episodes of Vice and
you'll have a little more substance, with a patented
visual style that this film is sorely lacking.
If anyone still earcs, the movie is playing at the
Fox Theatre.
