Sports 4 14 Monday, May 5, 1986 I USC bounce! By WAYNE WASHINGTON Staff writer It seems USC pitcher Rodney Richey must not believe the talk that this year's pitching staff will keep the Gamecocks from returning to the College World Series. USC broke out on top early, in a game that contrasted the 14-11 loss Carolina suffered to the Tigers Saturday night. Riley Polk opened the bottom of the first with a walk, and Dave Smyth followed with a single. Then Gamecock first baseman Joe Datin moved the runners to second and third with his sacrifice fly. Junior Charlie Aldrich scored Polk from third with another sacrifice to put USC ahead 1-0. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when I JSC"' If fF Rarn? linrH 'a cinvtf* tn right. Richey, who was told by Clemson, among others, that he was not ready for Division I college baseball, did not give up a single walk en route to his sixth victory against two losses. Richey blunted all Clemson rallies and at one point retired fifteen consecutive men. Jerry Brooks broke Clemson's hitless streak in the seventh, but the Tigers were not to hit again until the eighth. USC earned its 39th victory of the season on Sunday, but Clemson played the winners' role on Saturday. The Tigers defeated the Gamecocks 14-11 in a game that had a collective total of 11 home runs. After Sunday's action, USC and Clemson's records stand at 39-18 and 36-17. jiiM-mju. HI IIiiiii iihiimnw i WBHCT?H 1 ? ??? NEED STORAGE FC WE CAN SPECIAL STUC AS LOW AS $10.
