Group to decry Libya bombing By JULIET NADER News editor A group of nuclcar freeze advocates will sponsor a protest today to show South Carolina's congressional delegation they don't want the United States to bomb Libya again. From 12:15 until 1 p.m., three speakers in the courtyard of the Strom Thurmond Building on Assembly Street will voice their opinions on the recent U.S. attack, according to Kay Johnson, a member of the Columbia Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign. The protest will be called "A Vigil in Protest of the American Bombing of Libya." Bruce Pearson, a Quaker, will discuss non-violent ways of dealing with Libya. Middle East native Snahrough Akhavi, a USC government and international studies professor, will discuss internal conflicts in that area. Finally, Sulaiman Aljuraid, another Middle East native who is a GINT graduate student at USC, will use personal exnerirnro; tr> hie - _ , r " ' I viuvv 10 vp pv/on IUII i\J the bombing. "Wc hope to get enough people to show up to prove to the representatives that wc don't want them to bomb Libya again," Johnson said. "There are peaceful solutions to this." Doctor attacks Stc By AMY DELPO Senior reporter Nuclear war would be more likely if the Strategic Defense Initiative becomes a reality, said Dr. Donald Luria of the Physicians for Social Responsibility. l.uria also criticized the U.S. attack on Libya during his lecture at Gambrell Hall on Thursday. "If 'Star Wars' ever worked, both sides would now have this defense that's very effective, and whichever side figures out how to circumvent that has a gargantuan advantage because it is protected and the other side is not," Luria told an audience in Gambrell Hall on Thursday. The nation with such an advantage would be in a situation to make a first strike possible, said Luria, who is chairman of preventive medicine at the Medical College of New Jersey. "If there is a pre-emptive nuclear strike, it is not likely to come from either major power and therefore not likely to occur," Luria said. "The Soviets are cautious. The likelihood of the Soviets attacking the United States is miniscule." Luria called the arms race "hideous" and said everyone in the Soviet Union and the United States must accept the fact that both nations have ample deterrents. He also criticized the recent U.S. attack on L.ibya, saying our relations will worsen as a result. "We kill people, and we're proud of killing people, which is very bad," he said. "There's something very wrong with that. "This is just the kind of escalation that could end lin it u)r\n'( ll>ic linm _ K..? ?" ' - .. ..V k ?...j UIIIV. One of the main points of Luria's speech, "Nuclear War and the Assumption of Responsibility," is than everyone in the United States is responsible for what the government does. "We have to persuade everybody in this country that because we are a democracy, when our government acts, each of us is tarnished by our government's action," he said. "We are the government." The best way to get involved is through writing letters to the press, the Congress and the president, Luria said. He said the chances of nuclcar war would be lessened by a comprehensive nuclear test ban and the ratification of other treaties with the Soviet Union, such as SALT II. Luria's speech was part of a week of activities on U.S.-Soviet relations sponsored by USC's Alliance for Peace. terested job? lewspaper staff needs istant for the 1986-87 j're interested, please tudent Media Office in m 313 Russell House. use 1 NAVY CONGRATULATES I ;eph camp l singleton bert katz chael kerr l rebarick .n torbert \rren zwanka :arned FULL NROTC SCHOLARSHIPS rticipation in the NROTC College C SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS at USC ;AN for details ^ JONATHAN WIlllAMS/The Gamecock |ht) perform "Summer Nights" from }k Follies as part of Greek Week j !
