It was hard to resist the temptation
to strum the old air-guitar
while watching ZZ Top perform
Saturday night at the Coliseum.
Although they played for only
85 minutes, the Texas trio combined
polished musical skills, a
charismatic stage presence and a
dazzling laser display to entertain
the sold-out crowd.
The band had an unusual but
effective onenino1 n hlnrlf rnrtnin
opened and revealed a 20-foot
high Egyptian Sphynx behind the
stage. Two thin, red beams of
light shot from the eyes to center
stage. The three band members
then appeared in front of a large
automobile dashboard, eomplete
with a steering wheel and lighted i
dials. They then played "Got Me i
Under Pressure" to the delighted
crowd. i
Frank Beard played drums 1
atop the dashboard while
guitarist Billy Gibbons and
bassist Dustv Hill strutted m the
front of the stage. With beards

Gibbons warned anyone who
had used drugs or alcohol not to
drive home, and then played
"Arrested for Driving While
Blind" from the Tejas album.
During "Legs" from the
album Eliminator, a laser projected
the image of a woman in
provocative positions on a screen
hanging from the ceiling.
For the last part of the show,
the automobile dashboard
representing ZZ Top's trademark
? a 1933 Ford ? transformed
itself into a spaceship's interior
with working television monitors.
Highlighting the encores was
"La Grange" from the Tres
Hombres album. ZZ Top ended
the concert with "Tush."

King Lear
for Longst
A shortened version of King
Lear, one of William
Shakespeare's most intense plays,
will be presented by the USC
Department of Theatre and
Speech.
Director Russell Green, a pro
lessor in the department, has cut
the play almost in half from its
usual running time of three to
four hours.
"I've worked to revise the
structure, to clarify the play and
to cut it to a reasonable time
length for people's rumps,"
Green said.
Green is also trying to clear up
the play's cloudy points and update
archaic words.

"It may seem presumptuous,"
he said. "It may seem to be looking
down on the audience, but so
many people go away from a production

because they couldn't
understand it."
