Ellis throws
two TD passes

Todd Ellis threw for a pair of
touchdowns Saturday afternoon
during USC's first major football
scrimmage of spring practice.
Ellis, the highly-touted high
school prospect from
Greensboro, N.C., completed 20
of 35 passes for 291 yards. He
also threw four interceptions.

hamstring pull he sustained during
last week's opening drills.
Dennis Addison, who backed
up Ellis, was seven of 15 for 82
yards, with one touchdown and
two interceptions.
Using a new run 'n' shoot offense,
Ellis connected with Ryan
Bethea on a 12-yard scoring
strike and also hooked un with
Raynard Brown on a 70-yard
touchdown pass.
Addison's 31-yard pass to Vic
McConnell accounted for
another touchdown, and
wingback Sterling Sharpc ran 70
yards to close out the scoring.

The Gamecocks' spring practice
will end April 12 with the annual
spring game.
Softball team
beats Evansville
USC's 14th-ranked softball
team improved to 12-6 on the
season with a split of a
doubleheader against Eastern Illinois
and the University of
Evansville.
USC won the second game 2-1
against Evansville in 11 innings.
Using the international tiebreaker
rule, which allows both
teams to start a runner on second
base wjf.h nobody out after 10 innings,
the Lady Gamecocks' Lisa
DaCru* scored the winning run.
DaCruz started at second and
advanced to third on an infield
single by Lynn Krohn. After
Dena Sikole reached first base,
Marianne DiRupo singled up the
middle to score DaCruz.
The Lady Gamecocks dropped
the opener 1-0 in extra innings
when the Lady Panthers of
Eastern Illinois scored an unearned
run in the top of the ninth.
The softball team will be in action
again this weekend when
they travel to Houston for the
prestigious Houston Classic.

Paced by Al Quintana's grand slam home run in
the first inning. Northwestern defeated USC 7-4
Sunday to gain a split of its four-game scries with
mc uamecocks at Sarge Frye Field this weekend.
Casey Reed went the distance for USC, allowing
only six hits after getting in a jam in the opening
frame. His record dropped to 2-1.
USC won the opener of the series Friday 10-2. In
that contest, Rodney Richey flirted with a no-hitter
before winding up with a three-hitter and the victory,
his second of the season against no defeats. In
Saturday's doubleheader, USC won the opener 6-5
but dropped the second game when the Wildcats
scored in the top of the seventh for a 5-4 win.

run in the sccond when Riley Polk scored on a
fielder's choice and Garrett Carter scored on a
sacrifice fly by Jeff Barns. The Gamecocks pulled to
5-3 in the third when Chalrie Aldrich walked, then
scored on successive singles by Eddie Lendenski and
Polk.
But the Wildcats padded their lead to 7-3 with
single runs in the fourth and ninth innings. USC
rallied with two outs in the ninth when Dave Hollins

middle by Aldrich, but Lendenski flied out to center
to end the game.
USC, ranked 10th in the latest ESPN/Collegiate
Baseball poll, fell to 15-7 on the season. The
Gamecocks will be on the road Tuesday for a 3 p.m.
contest against UNC-Charlotte.
