USC's baseball team split a

righthander Casey Reed pitched
his first career shutout, limiting
the Cardinals to seven hits and
two walks while striking out four.
With the complete game victory,
Reed, 2-0, matched his victory
? total of last season and lowered?
his earned run average to 2.87.,
second-best on the pitching staff.
The contest was scoreless until
the bottom of the fifth inning,
when Joe Datin and Dave Hollins
slammed back-to-back home
runs with two out off loser Paul
Hubbard, 0-2. The homer was
Datin's second of the year after
missing ten games with a
hyperextended elbow.
"All 1 ever want to do is keep
the game close and let these guys
do the rest with their bats," Reed
said. "It you can keep it close in
this ballpark, you've got a
chance."
Reed sailed through the final
three innings after stranding six
Louisville runners in the first
four frames, including a basesloaded
jam in the fourth. The
Cardinals also had a chance to
score in the first, but Henry Hernandez
was thrown out at the
piate on a single oy no Cleveland.
USC also left six on base in the
first three innings. The
Gamecocks managed only two
base hits before erupting in the
fifth, a single by Datin in the first
and a single by Jeff Morris in the
third.
Datin went three-for-four in
the second game and drove in two
runs. Eddie Lendenski also had
an RBI for the Gamecocks, now
13-5 on the season and 4-1 in the
Metro Conference. Louisville is
6-9 overall and 1-3 in league play.

limited the Gamecocks to only
five hits, and put down a USC

McCormick worked the first six
and two-thirds innings, while
Tim Mau onl tll<? final mil fnr liic

USC's runs came on a home
run by Hollins in the sixth and a
double by Morris in the seventh.
The two teams were scheduled
to complete their series Wednesday,
but the heavy rains in Columbia
forced a cancellation, the
second rainout for USC this
season.
NOTES: The shutout was the
first tor south Carolina this year.
USC is now 5-2 at home, 7-1 on
the road and 1-2 in neutral sites.
