Gamecocks split twinbill with Cards BY TOM GATTO Staff writer USC's baseball team split a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon with Louisville, losing the opener 3-2 and taking the nightcap 4-0. With the complete game victory, Reed, 2-0, matched his victory ? total of last season and lowered? his earned run average to 2.87., second-best on the pitching staff. The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Joe Datin and Dave Hollins slammed back-to-back home runs with two out off loser Paul Hubbard, 0-2. The homer was Datin's second of the year after missing ten games with a hyperextended elbow. "All 1 ever want to do is keep the game close and let these guys do the rest with their bats," Reed said. "It you can keep it close in this ballpark, you've got a chance." Reed sailed through the final three innings after stranding six Louisville runners in the first four frames, including a basesloaded jam in the fourth. The Cardinals also had a chance to score in the first, but Henry Hernandez was thrown out at the piate on a single oy no Cleveland. USC also left six on base in the first three innings. The Gamecocks managed only two base hits before erupting in the fifth, a single by Datin in the first and a single by Jeff Morris in the third. Datin went three-for-four in the second game and drove in two runs. Eddie Lendenski also had an RBI for the Gamecocks, now 13-5 on the season and 4-1 in the Metro Conference. Louisville is 6-9 overall and 1-3 in league play. In the first game, Louisville limited the Gamecocks to only five hits, and put down a USC rally in the seventh inning. USC's runs came on a home run by Hollins in the sixth and a double by Morris in the seventh. The two teams were scheduled to complete their series Wednesday, but the heavy rains in Columbia forced a cancellation, the second rainout for USC this season.
