Spotlight 8 Monday, March 3, 1986 Review 'Hannah < By PATRICK JEAN Staff writer With 44Hannah and her Sisters," Woody Allen has made what is oerhaDs his best film ever The film, written and directed by Allen, is a comic-dramatic exploration into life's meaning and family relations. Allen reaches a creative peak above his earlier films here, painting a fetching portrait of three sisters. The central character is Hannah (Mia Farrow). An actress, she seems happily married to Elliot (Michael Caine). She's strong, financially stable and self-sufficient ? perhaps too much. The unstable sister is Holly (Dianne Wiest). She dresses oddly. is hvoeractive and everyone dislikes or decries her. Her apprehensiveness takes her from career to career and man to man, trying to find a niche in life. The most comical character is Mickey (Allen), Hannah's exhusband and a troubled TV director. Lee, uncertain of her place in life, develops a strong attachment to Elliot. Holly can't gain a relationship, career or happiness. Hannah's parents ? a flirtatious, alcoholic mother and a doting father ? are unhappy. These situations aren't treated as dramatically as they sound. Allen crcates a humor/drama hybrid. There is emotional, Ingmar Bergman-like treatment of Hannah and her family, along with Allen's typical hilarious wit and wry observations. Mickey is a comic, tragic aside. His observations evoke guffaws and sympathy. He thinks everything is wrong with his life. As he finds out that he doesn't have a fatal brain tumor, he becomes depressed that he will eventually die. His complaints go from jogging to Catholicism. Allen employs some artistic experimentation. Carlo Di Palmo's cinematography shows Allen's love of New York. Unlike some of Allen's previous films, he resolves all conflicts and presents a happy en ding. Each character solves his or her trouble, and the climactic scenes arc absolutely joyous. The ending causes a smile and a tear. Every actor is in top form. Wiest steals the show, but Allen, Farrow, Hershey and Caine are all brilliant. The supporting cast, which includes Von Sydow and Sam Waterston, also does well. Allen made a recovery from years of artistic floundering with "Zelig," "Broadway Danny Rose," and last year's wonderful i ne I'urpic Kose ol Cairo," overlooked by the Oscars. "Hannah and her Sisters," too good to be overlooked, is undoubtedly the best film Woody Allen has ever made. Don't miss it.
