the semifinals of the NCAA
Championships.
All-America forward Mike
Brady ? American's all-time
leading scorer, with a career total
of 65 goals, and a member of the
1985 U.S. National Team ?
plowed through the mud to score
one goal and assist another.
Despite a number of Gamecock
near-misses, the Eagle defense
held fast and handed USC its first
home defeat of the season.
The 4,500 fans on hand were
treated to a classic matchup that
featured the definitive goal

dominating goalkeeper in USC's
Warren Lipka. After 90 minutes
of mud wrestling, the day belonged
to Brady.
As the players slogged through
the muck created by two days of
heavy rains, neither team could
find the nets in a scoreless first
half. But the opportunities were
there.
In the first five minutes, an '
Eagle free-kick from midfield
went over everybody's head and
bounced to Brady's feet within
eight yards of the Gamecock
goal. Brady quickly took a shot,

With seconds left in the half,
USC midfielder Grenville Pope
fed a ball to Ami Arnthorsson,
who broke for the Eagle goal.
Hut American sweeper Keith
Trehy kept Arnthorsson wide and
forccd a shot that Eagle keeper
Stephen Pfcil was able to save.
Sunday's game marked Arnthorsson's
return to the field
after a thigh injury kept him out

The Gamccocks camc out in
the second half and won the
momentum. Arnthorsson ran to
a corner kick and head-flicked
the ball at the lower left corner of
the net for what appeared to be a
sure goal. Pfcil was at the near
post, easily beaten. But Eagle
fullback Troy Regis was covering
the far post and kicked Arn
morsson s snoi cicar irom inc
line.
Brady was the first to put the
finishing touch to the increasing
number of chances both teams
were creating in the final half.
With 58:11 gone, Eagle midfield
,r Serge Torreilles led Brady
to the left post with a free kick.
Brady forced his way between
Billy Hency and Marty Baltzegar
and pushed the ball through between
Lipka and the near post.
"1 think he was looking for a
cross," Brady said, "so I might
have caught him cheating just a
little bit. He allowed a little space
to me on the near post, and 1 was

through."
American's sccond goal camc
under similar circumstances 18
minutes, later. Brady made the
' same run, but saw teammate Billy
Corbett, a freshman, standing
unmarked in front of the far
post. Brady lifted a ball to Corbett's
feet, and the substitute forward
volleyed it into the roof of4
the net.
Minutes later, American midfielder
Henry Wagner scaled
Carolina's fate wheh he denied
Scott Cook with a line save. USC
attacked desperately in the closing
minutes, but the Eagle
defense held fast and advanced
American University to the
semifinals of the NCAA Championship
Tournament for the
first time.
