Five Points
jack-o'-lante
By KATHY LEWIS
Staff writer
Would-be jack-o'-lantern artists
will be carving away at
Goatfeathers Halloween night in
the bar's third annual pumpkin
competition.
Three years ago, the Five
Points bar had its first Halloween
pumpkin competition because the
owner "wanted to see all the
pumpkins."
"We usually see good competition,"
bar owner Jeff Helsley
said. Professional artists and
students like to compete, he said.
This year, $500 in prizes will be
awarded to "lin thp rnmnpti.
tion," said Helsley.
Contestants must bring their
pumpkins to Goatfeathers between
1 and 6 p.m. on the 31st.
Only one pumpkin per person is
allowed. Contestants may use only
pumpkin materials in their
creations, employee Yvette Connolly
said.
Candles, not flashlights, must
be used to light the pumpkins.
"You can't use anything artificial,"
Connolly said.
First prize is $250, second prize
is $125 and third prize is $75. A
$50 prize will go to the pumpkin
carver who is "most innovative,"

Connolly said.
Goatfeathers is expecting
around 100 pumokins. but the
contest "gets bigger every year,"
Helsley said.
Judges for the contest will be
Columbia Mayor Kirkman
Finlay, artist Blue Sky and Jean
Caughman of WIS-TV.
The judges have no specific
criteria, but may choose the pumpkin
they think is the most artistic
and creative, according to
Connolly.

Winners will be announced at
midnight. "We turn out all the
lights and there are about 100

The pumpkins will be
displayed around the bar and
outside, Connolly said.
Because of the Halloween
crowd, bar services only will be
offered at Goatfeathers, according
to Connolly.
