C arolina's 52-10 sinking of the
Pirates on Saturday was regarded
by Art Baker as "the most embarrassing
and humiliating experience
of my 10-year coaching
carccr."
The Gamecocks walked into
hast Carolina University's
licklcn Stadium to a sellout
crowd of 35,047, the largest in
I-.CIJ history, and after a sluggish
start on offense, gained more
than 500 yards in total offense .
I he two teams battled to a
scoreless lie ai me cnu 01 tnc irsl
quarter. IJSC gave up twice as
much yardage as they gained, but
the (iamccock defense twicc
thwarted HCU drives on a Joe
Brooks fumble recovery and a
Jerry Dunlap tackle of I X IJ
tailback Iony Maker on forth
and two from the IJSC. 11 yard
line.
The first score of the game
came near the end of the second
quarter on a 74 yard drive, keyed
by a 32-yard option run by junior
running back Anthony Smith and
capped by a one-yard dive by
Kent Hagood. Scott Magler's ad
ded the extra point, and IJSC
lead 7-0.
I -. CIJ scored its only
touchdown of the game on a
54-yard drive in five plays,

USC's socccr team tapped its
first undefeated home season by
beating Wake Forest 2-0 yesterday
at The Graveyard.
USC, 16-1-0 and 12-0 at home,

(iamccock keeper Warren
l.ipka had to make just one save
in the entire 90 minutes. I.ate in
the first half, Deacon forward
Chris Went/ split Carolina
fullbacks Marty Halt/cgar and
Hilly Hency and broke free in
USC's penalty area, catching
l.ipka out of goal.
"I thought Marty was in front
of the guy," l.ipka said, "and
when he (Went/) broke through I
had to pedal back because I knew
I wasn't gonna get to the ball. I
thought he was gonna chip the
ball over my head, but he was
pressured by Marty to hit it, and I
was able to grab it."
Doug Allison's seventh matchwinning
goal of the season came
with 21:59 gone when he volleyed
home a Danny Katcliff cross to

An injury to Gamccock striker ^
Ami Arnthorsson (l) goals in

"It's getting better every

where to run now. Before, we'd
often run into the same spaces,
but now we're creating spaces for
each other, and it's working well.
