Jazz experience
By BETH LOWREY
Staff writer
Jazz is alive in Columbia, according tc
Carolina Jazz Socicty director Joe King.
King is one of the many jazz musicians whe
add spirit and uniqueness to an age-old forn
of entertainment. He plays trombone wit!
Tony Torre's Twin Cities Jazz Band, whicl
appeared Wednesday at the Golden Spur.
Traditional jazz is a Dixieland form of jaz;
that originated in New Orleans. It is reminis
cent of the Prohibition period in America
said Curt McMurray, publicity chairman o
uic nuiiciy.
"Saxophone is not a traditional jazz instru
ment," McMurray said.
He said students and young people ar
more interested in modern or "pop" jaz2
while traditional jazz attracts an older crowd
"Students need to expose themselves to th
sound of jazz," McMurray said. "Jazz musi
has the happiest beat to it. You must ap
preciatc the unique sound and feelin
associated with live Dixieland Jazz."
Most performers experience jazz music eai
ly in life. "My father used to take me to jaz
concerts when I was a small boy," McMurra
"We would travel a long way ? by train to
go to these concerts. My father knew whei
all the great musicians were. One of my bij
gest thrills was meeting the jazz immortal Jc
'King' Oliver on a train station platform," Y
said.

l The Carolina Jazz Society is a non-profit
1 organization founded in 1957. "It is
dedicated to keeping Dixieland jazz alive and i
z strutting in the Carolinas," McMurray said.
Most of the 250 members are more than 40
i, years old. They get together one Sunday each

house band, the Tony Torre group.
i- It's an opportunity for entertainment and
pleasure, former President Bob Davis said,

c many visiting musicians are invited on stage

g Some of the past guests included guitarist
Lloyd Ellis, bass player Bob Haggard, tromr
bonist Bill Alread, trumpeter Billy Butter:z
field, singer Maxine Sullivan and clarinetist
y Joe Darensburg.
McMurray said playing good jazz music
and creating an interest in traditional jazz
e among young people are two of the goals of
the Carolina Jazz Society.
>e "Traditional jazz music is America's
le greatest contribution to the world of the
musical arts," he said.

is being held by well-armed
captors.
The film turns ugly in the
climax, as Matrix blows away
hundreds of henchmen with his
bullets, knives and grenades. He
eventually finds not only his
daughter, but the enraged explatoon
member. Their fight to
the death may be too grisly for
some to watch.
Gory violence is a staple of this
film. Villains bounce off rocks,
arc impaled or have their body
parts scattered across the screen.
Slow-motion is favored in the
climax so the audience can see
numerous bad guys' chests or
heads pierced by bullets, knives
or shrapnel, along with gushing
blood.
The film's sense of humor is
one of its assets. After killing his
guard on the plane, Matrix covers
him with his hat and asks a flight
attendant not to disturb him
because "he's dead tired." After
dropping another villain off a
cliff, he walks back to the
stewardess, who asks what happened.
"I let him go," he says.
He also gets to repeat some great
one-liners from "The Terminator,"
like "Get out," "I'll
be back" and a few that can't be
published.
Schwarzenegger has improved
somewhat as an actor. He's not
unintentionally funny anymore;

the audience laughs when he says
something funny, but not when
he says anything at all. For- _
tunately, he doesn't talk much in 1/ i
this movie. He's too busy flexing
his muscles and killing people,
which is what the audience is
there to see. Schwarzenegger is a
box-office star because of his
action-adventure image, and he
doesn't disappoint his fans here.
Chong is disappointing as the
stewardess. Most of her lines consist
of screaming or looking pretty.
She does those well, but she
has no character. She never gets
romantically involved with
Matrix. But give her credit for
getting through all the chase ^
segments in a dress and high
heels.
"Commando" is more stylish
than "Rambo," but just as
violent, l nc vioicncc may oc
gory, but it's shamefully entertaining.
The audience is on
Matrix's side, cheering as he
blows away villain after villain.
The film will thrill and entertain
as expected.
"Commando" is not for
everyone, but it is a fun, stylish
and stupid adventure movie.
Viewing this film on a full
stomach is not recommended.
But if you expect grisly, entertaining
and enveloping action,
"Commando" is great.
