A Durham, N.C. ? USC's soc
ccr team bounced back from its
loss to Clemson Oct. 13 by
beating the 14th-ranked Duke
Blue Devils 1-0 Friday in
Durham, N.C.
(iamecock stopper Marty
Baltzegar scored the decisive
goal for USC, 14 1, with 13:40
left in the match when he
booted home a Keith Leeper
corner kick that had been dropped
by Duke goalkeeper Pat
Johnston in front of the Blue
Devil goalmouth.
The match was critical for
both teams: The Blue Devils

would all but assure them of a
bid.
USC's victory over Duke
completes a sweep of the three
southern region opponents the
Gamecocks needed to beat out
for the second souhern bid,
assuming that Clemson - with
wins over Duke and USC - will
remain at the top of the
southern region.
The Gamecocks' third consecutive
away match kicked off
at 7:30 p.m. under the lights at
Duke Soccer Field. A crowd of
about 4,000 looked on as the
two teams battled to a 0-0 draw
at the half. USC managed three
shots on goal and won two corners
in the first half while
allowing the Blue Devils four
shots and two corners.

half by going to work on

half of the field. And
one of those corners led to the
winning goal.
"We didn't make any adjustments
at halftime other
than that we wanted to make
sure to play our wings wids, get
the ball in behind them, to use
our speed on the flanks, and to
take more advantage of the opportunities
that we did create
in terms of shooting," said I JSC
head coach Mark Herson.
Baltzegar took advantage of
an opportunity he said he lias
long looked forward to.
"I've been waiting for that to
happen for a long time," said
Baltzegar. "After marking the

every corner kick - it finally
paid off."
The Blue Devils put pressure
on the Gamecocks with about
15 minutes left to play. AllAmerican
forward Tom Kain
burst through the middle and
left a nice ball in the Carolina
penalty area for teamate John
Kerr. Leeper heat Kerr to the
ball and his clearance was
knocked out by Duke for a I JSC
throw-in.
Glenn Witt's throw-in went
to Gamecock sweeper Billy
Hency, who banged a long ball
forward to a breaking Doug
Allison. Uuke fullback Keith
Wiseman came from behind
Allison and won a header that
turned the ball over to Duke.
The Blue Devils came back on
the right wing and got a ball in
the Gamecock box that USC
was unable to clear. Finally,
Hency won the ball from Duke
fullback Bill Colavecchio and
dribbled it out towards the left
side where he was tripped by
Kain and awarded a free kick.
Danny Ratcliff ran with Hency's
free kick all the way down
the left side to Duke's troal line
where he won a corner. Leeper
- who takes most of USC's corners
- hit a shot that Johnston
tried to catch in front of the
goal. When the Duke keeper
dropped the ball, Jim Sonefeld
and Baltzegar simultaneously
took a whack at it. The ball
bounced off Johnston, and
Baltzegar capped 77 minutes of
teamwork by booting in the rebound
for the match-winner.
"We took it to them the
whole game," Berson said.
"We needed to bounce back
and we did, in a very tough environment
against a very good
team.
