Viewpoint " Monday, October 14, 1985 ? ????????THE GAMECOCK Fault Putting the blame for sexual assaull Many officials interviewed on the recent assault of a USC student had truckloads of advice to give on how women could curtail these attacks. The irony of the whole situation is ridiculous. Women are told "be careful", "don't walk alone late at night" and "don't dress to attract attention," to name a few. The implication tends to be that women elicit neeativp rpcnrttup hprance nf fh#? wav ---O - 1 ~ v..*. I..VJ dress, walk and carry out their feminine qualities. Females should not get the blame for criminals who may strike out at any given moment on a sudden whim over some suppressed anger or any number of unknown reasons. As for dressing to "attract attention," people like to dress up to go out, usually in attire that they may not wear to class, what some people may term wild. Females should not have to revamp their wardrobe to consist solely of sweats, and ankle-length skirts and oversized shirts. Rapes also happen in foreign countries where the women arc covered from head to foot in material. Most sexual assualts are out of anger and are never encouraged by a certain manner in which the victim has conducted herself, making that 1* - - * t auvice irrelevant. ' I [III". ^ ! on women unfair t, battery victims be a potential danger? Why is it people assume that males can wander around at any given time and not be in fear of their welfare constantly while women are encouraged to be acconpanied by someone of the opposite gender? Women should be able to dress a they please, when they please and not be reprimanded for it. Females on campus should be able to go to the library or to a club whenever they want and not have to drag their friends along with them if they want to leave and their friends don't. It is not fair to ask females to take special precautions and live in a state of constant paranoia while lunatics run around. Those people should be locked up and reprimanded for their failure to control their behavior. Instead, women are asked to make an extra effort to prevent crimes. There is no reason for any one person, male or female, to be constantly in fear of some situation that may or may not occur. People have walked behind the Russell House, by the bank machines, several times late at night without even thinking twice. They don't realize that they may be the one in a million who gets attacked, and they shouldn't have to. Maybe one day people of either eender can live in the manner in which they choose without fear for their well-being. But, until that day, women should feel free to stop worrying that the way they dress, walk, and generally conduct their lives will endanger them. out of your dash Oil Duncan ious photograph stereo's volume up loud enough to chip paint from the condo d about these across the street, The Who make ts to purge the a much bigger impression on the s remember Gar- car in the next lane than Madonle: "Our parents na docs.
