match looks like a mad scramble
of yelling, diving, smashing and
tipping.
But to a volleyball player, the
game is an intricate mixing of
signals and plays, all hinging on a
special on-court communicaton
between players.
One of the most important
communications is that between
setter and hitter.
USC seems to have the area
well in hand, leading the nation
^ in assist percentage with a .518
average. Sophomore Julie Morrison
sets Carolina's offense in
motion and leads the naton as
well with a .591 average in assist
percentage.
An assist percentage is a telling
statistic, computed by dividing
the total number of sets which
resulted in points by the total
number of sets attempted.

"When I first came in I was really
confident but I was hesitant, too,
about whether 1 was rcadv to take
over her spot."
Exprience-wise, Morrison is
freshman, sincc she did not get
much playing time last year
behind Higgins.
Head Coach Bonnie Kenny
said Morrison worked hard during
the spring to become familiar
with USC's hitters, but becoming
USC's number one setter involves
many things for Morrison besides
getting used to the hitters.
"She takes constant abuse
irom me especially, Dccause snc s
involved in every single play,
she's touching every single
volley," Kenny said. "She just
can't afford to have a bad game
because if she does, then we do,
too."
Kenny said Morrison is still
learning just how vital her role is,
but is beginning to realize her importance
as she improves.
"As far as her set distributon
she s very smart, but she second
guesses herself, which means she
hesitates and that makes her unsure
of herself."

Gamecocks have played without \

Graveyard," 3-2. 13
The Carolina defense helped
goalkeeper Warren Lipka record
his fifth consecutive shutout (a <
school record) by limiting the '
Bulldogs to just four shots on I
goal and one corner. I
Meanwhile, Scott Cook, Doug 1
Allison, Danny Ratcliff and
Grcnville Pope gave USC the
most goals that the team has
stored in one match since 1
Carolina clobbered Baptist 8-0 on
Sept. 4th.
The Gamecocks went up 1-0
with 7:16 gone on a Marty
Baltzcgar throw-in that was flicked
into the Bulldog penalty area
by Jim Sonefcld. Scott Cook was
there to head the ball in for his
fifth goal of the season.
Cook figured in the second
goal when he took a corner is
minutes later that Danny Ratcliff
converted to give USC a 2-0 lead.
Ratcliff's goal, his 10th of the
season, tied him with Doug
Allison for the team goal-scoring
lead. Allison ? a sophomore
stiker from Barnstaple, England
? broke the tic twelve minutes
later when Scott Cook intercepted
a Bulldog pass deep in
the Citadel half and broke for the .
goal. When Cook attracted a
crowd of defenders he passed off
to Allison who netted his 11th
goal, giving USC a 3-0 half-time
lead.

USC takes its unbeaten streak
into Clcmson's Riggs Field on
Sunday for a 2 p.m. match with
the Tigers, last years' national
champions and currently ranked
number one.
Clcmson, 10-0-1, (the Tigers
were tied by seventh-ranked Connecticut)
has a Thursday match
against Southern Connecticut
University, ranked number one in
the NCAA Division II.
Notes: The Tiiiers lead the
USC/Clcmson series 8-0. . . Last
years result was a 3-2 overtime
win for Clcmson at "The
Graveyard"... The two
Carolina goals in that match
equaled the USC goal total for
the seven previous meetings. . .
The trip to The Citadel was a
homecoming of sorts for head
,coach Mark Berson: his first job
as a head coach was at The
Citadal in 1977, the year before
he came to Carolina to start the
Gamecock soccer program.
