Askus gives facts
about Columbia,too
By PAULA WETHINGTON
Staff writer
For anyone with a question, USC's Askus telephone information
center probably has the answer.
The Askus system has over 800 tapes on file for people to call in and
listen to, including tourist information. This service not only provides
general University information, but also supplies information about
Columbia and is used by people throughout Richland and Lexington
counties.

the only information system of its kind in the state.
To get information, a caller should dial 777-7777 or 777-7779 from
the hours of 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and ask the
operator for a specific numbered tape to hear. The caller can find the
number of the tape they want to hear in the Askus directory or the
USC phone book.
"The nice thing about it is that the caller remains anonymous. All
they need to do is call and request the tape number," Martain said.
Askus operators do more than just answer the phone and start the
recording machines. Brian Shealy, one of the three operators for
Askus, said sometimes people ask questions not on the tapes.
When that happens, Shealy said the operators either try to answer
the questions or refer the caller to someone else.
"Sometimes it gets monotonous and boring (between phone calls),
but all in all it's an enjoyable job. You get to talk to a lot of people,"
he said.
If any organization wants to have a tape on file or be listed in the
daily activities tape, they should contact Martain or Susan Heyward in
Russell House West Wing 108.

Senate plans
lottery signup

Lottery signup for CarolinaClemson
tickets will be held
Nov. 4-6, Mike Gillen of ACO
announced at Wednesday night's
Student Senate meeting.
The list of students receiving
tickets should be posted by Nov.
13. Block seating will begin the
Monday after the list is
published.
Plans to make improvements
on laundry equipment and
lighting around campus were also
announced by the Residence Life
committee.
Sen. Ed Sookikian, Academics
committee, resigned his position
as co-chairman of Honors and
Awards because of voting com- j
plications concerning his status as
a senior. Jeff Mclntyre was voted 1
new co-chairman. |
Sen. Sookikian raised the problem
of Student Senate seats not
being filled. He said the goal of
the senate is to have one senator
representative for approximately
412 students, but most vacant
scats now belong to off-campus
students.
Sen. Sookikian proposed a motion
be made to leave seats open
to on-and off-campus students.
He also proposed reapportionment
of senate seats among the
separate USC colleges.
The purpose of his proposal
would be to fill the seats which
arc vacant, he said.
This proposition was debated
last year and not passed.
However, because of the large
