"Regardless of the controversies,
pro and con, it's working," said John
Moore, assistant commissioner for the
department. He said the changes in
diet and exercise habits that cost about
$60,000 to institute have helped the
600 youths who are cared for by the
agency.

Among the changes Moore instituted
were adding a fourth meal of
fruit and fruit juices to their diets,
replacing the candy and soft drink
machines in cafcterias with health food
and fruit juices, taking the salt and
sugar dispensers from cafeteria tables,
banning smoking by the young people

smoke around them, and beginning an
exercise program including jogging
and weightlifting.
MOORE SAID he got on the health
kick when he attended a seminar by the
American Institute for Biosocial
Research while he was working for the
Alabama DYS.

le's behavior
"There were claims a lot of delinquent
behavior was linked to nutrition
and diet," Moore said.
As a way to test that, the department
official adopted the health food
life?uvle for a week. "At the end of the
week, I felt better," Moore said.
He and his family soon adjusted
their diets.
"I BECAME a believer," he said.
"In the case of John Moore and his ^
family, I saw a difference in myself
and the kids' behavior."
The Alabama DYS also adonted
many of the same methods and
"found the number of serious incidents
and escapes took a nosedive,"
Moore said. "By seeing it work there I
felt if it works there certainly the people
in South Carolina can't be much
different."
