latest film.

Woody Allen has been ignored by moviegoers in recenl
sears, bin "The Purple Rose of Cairo" is bound to wake up
disgruntled Cans and film buffs.
Allen comes off a best director Oscar nomination for
"Hrouduay Danny Rose" with this surreal, imaginative
plunge into fantasy. Allen, who also wrote the film, has outdone
himself this time by conjuring up a plot that could have

of Cairo" does anything but fail.
Mia Farrow, Allen's latest love interest, stars as Cecillia, a
battered, unloved wife and a bumbling waitress in a smalltown
Depression cafe. Her reality is harsh, complete with a
monster for a husband and a probably miserable future.
THF. MOVIES whisk harrow's careiuliy struciurea
charactcr oul of the depressed 1930s and into the Hollywood
fantasy world of her dreams.
A film called "The Purple Rose of Cairo" begins a run at
the local movie theater just as Cecillia struggles to break free
of her demanding husband and copes with the loss of her job.
Tom Baxter, a minor charactcr in the film-within-a-film,
played by Jeff Daniels, decides to take a leave of absence from
his mundane job in a bad movie and declare his love lor tner
fragile Cecillia.
As if Baxter's leap off the screen and into Cecillia's arms
isn't enough to delight and baffle anyone, the rest of the
"Purple Rose" cast onscreen becomes increasingly disgruntled
and impatient with their wandering character, while
Cecillia finds her new life a bit hard to swallow.

Baxter and Cecillia fall in love, only to have the actor
played Baxter ? also played by Jeff Daniels ? show up
become seduced by Cecillia's beauty. He's desperate to re
his character to the screen and uses Cecillia to rid realit
fiction.
"PURPLE HOSE" sounds ridiculous, but it isn't. The
is misleading, but this small, short film displays Allen's
and absolute brilliance. Using imagination to at?nhcan
degree, Allen has created one of the year's most sp
movies.
Allen also contrasts the ridiculous wealth of Hollyv
with the bleak poverty of the Depression. This subtle iss
interesting to see on film, and the mockery of reality is anc
unexpected asset.
Jeff Daniels from "Terms of Endearment" is also excc
in his dual role, playing characters that stem from reality
fiction at the same time.
"The Purple Rose of Cairo" comes as a complete sun
but don't be surprised to sec it mentioned when awards <
rolling around once again.
